Key job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities - Software Development Manager III

• Define and execute AI strategy for software development processes, identifying opportunities where AI accelerates engineering workflows, piloting innovative tools and practices, and scaling successful innovations across multiple engineering teams to drive measurable productivity gains.
• Lead the design, implementation, and delivery of large-scale, business-critical software systems while providing technical leadership and architectural oversight for complex engineering challenges, ensuring solutions are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with long-term organizational goals.
• Serve as on-site cultural anchor and strategic leader for all co-located engineers regardless of reporting structure, fostering cross-team collaboration, building a strong engineering community, and representing the site in global technical forums and leadership discussions.
• Drive team and cross-team goal setting by working backwards from customer problems, contributing to strategic organizational planning processes, and influencing product roadmaps through technical insights that balance innovation with delivery commitments.
• Build and nurture high-performing engineering teams through effective hiring, mentoring, performance management, and career development, while establishing sustainable team structures, clear ownership models, and operational excellence practices that deliver consistently without requiring constant oversight.

A day in the life

Your day combines strategic leadership with hands-on technical engagement. You'll engage in people management activities-coaching direct reports, conducting one-on-ones, and fostering team development. You'll also participate in priority alignment meetings where you collaborate with stakeholders to balance competing demands and drive consensus on technical direction. Additionally, you'll lead technical deep-dives, leveraging your engineering expertise to review architectural decisions, challenge assumptions, and guide complex problem-solving sessions that span multiple teams.

Join Amazon Devices Hardware's Technology and Architecture team, which builds core technology powering Fire TV, Echo Show, Echo Dot, and other devices used by millions daily. We're passionate technologists tackling complex engineering challenges at massive scale while upholding high standards of quality and innovation. As we expand into new domains like Audio technology, we're seeking talented software engineering leaders who share our vision of creating transformative customer experiences through exceptional technology.

Basic Qualifications

• 7+ years of engineering experience
• 3+ years of engineering team management experience
• 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
• Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
• Experience partnering with product or program management teams
• Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
• Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
• Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
