Overview

Porter is building the future of last-mile logistics with a focus on transforming operations and enabling growth for businesses. This role is for a backend engineer who will design and develop scalable services that power Porter’s platform.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and Development: Architect and implement robust backend architectures that support complex business requirements and scale effectively.
• Feature Implementation: Write high-quality code to implement new features and enhance existing functionalities using Java and related frameworks (e.g., Spring Boot).
• Technical Documentation: Create comprehensive technical documentation to ensure maintainability and knowledge sharing.
• Cloud Services Utilization: Leverage AWS/GCP services (EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, Cloud Functions, Kubernetes) to deploy and manage scalable cloud-native applications.
• Infrastructure as Code: Use Terraform or CloudFormation to manage and automate cloud infrastructure.
• Service Design: Design and implement microservices that are resilient, maintainable, and scalable, following best practices.
• Inter-Service Communication: Ensure efficient communication between microservices using REST, gRPC, or message queues.
• Database Management
• Schema Design: Design database schemas to support features, ensuring data integrity and performance.
• Optimization: Optimize queries and indexing for performance and reduced latency.
• Data Migration: Plan and execute data migration strategies for smooth upgrades.

API Development

• API Design: Design and develop RESTful APIs that are well-documented, secure, and easy to consume by front-end applications and third-party systems.
• Security: Implement authentication and authorization mechanisms (e.g., OAuth, JWT) to secure APIs.

Required Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; equivalent practical experience considered.
• Experience: 2.5-5 years of backend development experience with a focus on Java and related frameworks; proven track record of large-scale backend systems in production.
• Hands-On Experience: Practical experience with AWS and/or GCP services (EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, Cloud Functions, Kubernetes).
• Certification: Relevant cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer, Google Professional Cloud Developer) are a plus.

• Proficiency in Java: Deep understanding of core Java concepts, including multithreading, concurrency, and memory management; proficiency with Spring Boot, Hibernate, etc.

• Microservices: Experience designing and developing microservices architectures, including service discovery, load balancing, and circuit breaking; familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and service mesh technologies.

• Database Skills: Proficient in SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Cassandra); experience with optimization techniques, indexing, and query tuning.

• API Development: Strong experience in RESTful APIs; proficiency with API documentation tools like Swagger/OpenAPI.
• Version Control: Proficient in Git workflows; familiar with GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket.

• Problem-Solving: Analytical, creative, and effective communicator; able to document technical concepts clearly.
