Job summary

UNITRADE 745 (Pty) Ltd in Johannesburg seeks a highly experienced Senior Tailings Engineer to join our Tailings Department on a permanent basis. You will work on tailings storage facilities, return water dams, and related infrastructure across South Africa and selected international African markets.

You will lead projects, mentor junior engineers, perform stability and seepage analyses, coordinate with project managers and clients, and stay abreast of the latest tailings best practices.

Qualifications

• More than 7 years’ experience in tailings engineering.
• BEng or BSc Eng in Civil Engineering; ECSA registration.
• Postgraduate geotechnical experience is advantageous.
• Strong knowledge of soil mechanics and CPTu testing.
• Experience in tailings dam breach assessments.
• Willingness to travel, within Africa.

Job description

Our client is seeking a highly experienced and self-motivated Senior Tailings Engineer to join their Tailings Department on a permanent basis. Based in Johannesburg, this role offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of tailings storage facilities, return water dams and associated infrastructure across South Africa and international African markets.

Key Responsibilities:

• Plan, schedule and manage engineering projects.
• Assist project managers and directors with project delivery and technical reporting.
• Conduct surveillance and inspections of tailings storage facilities and return water dams.
• Assist the Engineer of Record with annual audit inspections.
• Lead and participate in site investigations and construction management activities.
• Drive the design of new tailings storage facilities, return water dams and associated infrastructure.
• Perform and oversee stability and seepage analyses.
• Compile proposals and assist with the appointment of sub-consultants and contractors.
• Manage project teams and delegate work to graduate, junior and intermediate engineers.
• Mentor and transfer technical knowledge to developing engineers.
• Maintain current knowledge of developments and best practices within the tailings industry.

Requirements:

• More than 7 years’ experience in tailings engineering.
• BEng or BSc Eng in Civil Engineering.
• Professional Engineer registration with ECSA.
• Postgraduate experience in geotechnical engineering would be advantageous.
• Strong knowledge of soil mechanics, CPTu testing and interpretation, and laboratory testing of soils and tailings materials.
• Experience in geotechnical investigations and tailings dam breach assessments.
• At least 5 years’ experience with limit equilibrium and numerical slope stability and seepage analysis.
• Strong working knowledge of software such as GeoStudio, PLAXIS or Slide.
• Understanding of different engineering contract types.
• Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and MS Project/Primavera.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D or Modelmaker.
• Valid driver’s licence and passport.
• Willingness to travel, predominantly within South Africa, Tanzania and West Africa.
