Job summary

American Express is seeking a Senior Software Engineer I to lead end-to-end software development, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with product teams to align technology with business goals.

You will design and implement Java and React-based solutions, drive testing and deployment, and help optimize performance across distributed systems and cloud platforms. Flexible hybrid work arrangements are available.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, and/or comparable experience; advanced degree preferred
• Knowledge of distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, NoSQL, and relational databases
• Knowledge of core tools used in planning, analyzing, crafting, building, testing, configuring, and maintaining assigned applications

• Provide guidance and support to junior engineers, fostering professional growth within the team
• Direct the design, development, testing, and deployment of software applications and systems

Specifically, our team is responsible for the company's technology engineering, architecture, and infrastructure, providing 24x7 support to ensure an uninterrupted, high-quality experience for customers and colleagues. We also provide product management for core enterprise platforms, and lead technology risk and information security, enterprise data governance and platforms, digital product and design, and enterprise AI platforms on behalf of the company.

Senior Software Engineer I directs the end-to-end development of software applications, ensures adherence to best practices, mentors and coaches junior engineers, and collaborates with teams to optimize performance and integration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, and/or comparable experience; advanced degree preferred
• Knowledge of distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, NoSQL, and relational databases
• Knowledge of the core tools used in the planning, analyzing, crafting, building, testing, configuring, and maintaining of assigned application(s)

Work Experience

• 8+ years of Software engineering and development experience or a related job
• Experience in application design, software development, and automated testing
• Experience in object-oriented design and coding with variety of languages
• Experience in distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, and relational databases
• Experience in Agile software development methodologies and practices such as Scrum/Kanban, iterations, user stories
• Experience with Java/J2EE, React, Spring Boot, Microservices, Kafka and related technologies.
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP), containerization technologies (Docker/Kubernetes), and CI/CD tools (Git, Jenkins, Maven, or similar).
• Experience in automation testing and documentation (i.e. automated, functional, and performance)
