Job summary

S. C. Innovators in Chandigarh is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to own the mechanical design of our special purpose machines from customer requirement to on-floor deployment.

You will model and draw in Fusion 360, validate tolerances, select components, prepare BOMs and manufacturing drawings, and collaborate with shop-floor teams to ensure robust, safe and reliable equipment.

Qualifications

• Diploma or B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Production or Automobile engineering.
• Minimum 3 years in an automation company, SP machine builder, or tooling and fixture design house.
• Proficient with Autodesk Fusion 360; strong SolidWorks, Inventor or Creo users who can switch.
• Strong GD&T knowledge and judgement on tolerances.
• Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals (mass, force, torque, inertia, deflection, stress).
• Pneumatics: cylinder and valve selection, circuit basics.
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes and cost awareness.
• Ability to read supplier catalogs and datasheets for justified selections.
• Comfortable on the shop floor with fitters, machinists, welders and vendors.

Responsibilities

• Develop machine concepts from customer drawings and samples; balance cycle time and prepare layouts and 3D views.
• Model the machine in Fusion 360 and verify motion studies for clearance and interference.
• Design frames, guarding, jigs, grippers, conveyors and indexing mechanisms.
• Size pneumatic cylinders and valves; select motors, gearboxes and actuators; document force and torque calculations.
• Release fully dimensioned drawings with GD&T and prepare BOM.
• Choose manufacturing methods and prepare inspection plans for vendor parts.
• Support assembly, trials and site commissioning; update models with floor changes.
• Build standard design and component libraries; review junior designs.
• Design for safety including guarding, interlocks, e-stop and ergonomics.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer — Special Purpose Machines

Location: Chandigarh (on-site) | Full time | Minimum 3 years' experience

ABOUT THE ROLE

You will own the mechanical design of our machines, from the customer's requirement to a machine running on their production floor. Beyond modelling and drawing, you are accountable for the design decisions: the concept chosen, the tolerances specified, the manufacturing method selected, and whether the parts that come back from the vendor fit and work.

In a special purpose machine business, the designer owns the outcome. The machine has to work, not just look correct on screen.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Concept and feasibility: develop machine concepts from customer drawings and samples, covering stations, sequence of operations, indexing, feeding and unloading. Estimate and balance cycle time, check feasibility of critical operations, and prepare layouts and 3D views for proposals.
• Detailed design: build the complete machine as a structured parametric assembly in Autodesk Fusion 360. Use joints and motion studies to verify stroke, clearance and interference across the full cycle.
• Machine elements: design frames and weldments, sheet metal guarding, jigs and fixtures, locating and clamping, grippers, pick‑and‑place units, slides, chutes, conveyors and indexing mechanisms.
• Sizing and calculations: size pneumatic cylinders and select valves and FRL units. Select motors, gearboxes, servo and stepper actuators, bearings, linear guides, ball and lead screws. Document force, torque, inertia, deflection, bolt and weld strength and factor of safety calculations.
• Drawings and BOM: release fully dimensioned manufacturing drawings with correct GD&T, fits, surface finish, welding and heat‑treatment callouts. Prepare the bill of materials and control revisions through an engineering change process.
• Manufacturing and inspection: choose how each part is made (turning, milling, grinding, wire cut, EDM, sheet metal, fabrication or bought‑out). Prepare inspection plans for vendor parts and decide on deviations, rework or rejection.
• Build and commissioning: support assembly on the shop floor, take part in trials and factory acceptance tests, and support site commissioning. Make sure every change made on the floor goes back into the model and drawings.
• Standards: build our standard design library and component library, and turn field failures into design checklists. Review drawings by junior designers as the design team grows.
• Safety: design for operator and maintenance safety, including guarding, interlocks, pinch‑point elimination, e‑stop reach and ergonomics.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

• Diploma or B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Production or Automobile engineering.
• Minimum 3 years in an automation company, special purpose machine builder, or tooling and fixture design house.
• Good working knowledge of Autodesk Fusion 360: parts, assemblies and joints, sheet metal, weldments, motion study and drawings. Strong SolidWorks, Inventor or Creo users who are willing to switch are welcome.
• Good command of GD&T, and the judgement to know which dimension needs a tight tolerance and which does not.
• A firm grasp of engineering fundamentals (mass, force, torque, inertia, stress, deflection), with calculations done rather than guessed.
• Pneumatics: cylinder and valve selection, circuit basics, force and speed control.
• Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes, including what each one costs and can hold.
• Ability to read supplier catalogues and datasheets and make a justified selection.
• Comfortable on the shop floor with fitters, machinists, welders and vendors.

GOOD TO HAVE

• Rotary indexers, bowl feeders, servo axes or robot‑integrated cells.
• FEA / structural simulation, Fusion 360 CAM.
• Aluminium profile framing; stainless steel builds for food or pharma.
• Experience guiding or reviewing junior engineers.
• Awareness of machine safety standards and risk assessment.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

• 3 months: fluent in our standards and vendor base; owns the detailed design of a machine already in the pipeline.
• 6 months: takes a project from customer requirement to released drawings and BOM without supervision.
• 12 months: owns the mechanical scope of several concurrent projects and has measurably improved our design library and cut repeat errors between design and assembly.
