Job Summary
Oversees software engineering projects, ensuring conformance with plans, policies, procedures, budgets, and schedules. Establishes and interprets objectives, policies, and procedures and takes overall responsibility for device software development across a group of projects. Manages Software Development Supervisors and Software Managers to ensure milestones and objectives are met. The position typically works under limited supervision and direction, exercising discretionary and substantial decision‑making authority.
Responsibilities
- Work in collaboration with Software Development Supervisors/Managers to ensure alignment to required milestones.
- Assign projects to software managers and prepare personnel for higher responsibility.
- Review and ensure resource plans are appropriate across multiple projects.
- Assign roles, responsibilities, and day‑to‑day management of the team.
- Coach and mentor team members to continually improve performance.
- Manage recruitment activities, annual performance reviews, timesheet approvals, and holiday requests.
- Collaborate and share technical expertise within the department and other departments as required.
- Analyze and contribute to system and subsystem requirements specifications and design definitions.
- Ensure design, development, and test of applications and programs support the company’s products.
- Ensure software programs follow established quality standards and CTS engineering procedures, including coding, unit testing, and software configuration control.
- Prepare high‑ and low‑level detailed software design specifications, storyboards, and interface specifications.
- Control cost and schedule performance of all sub‑cost center activities.
- Assist in the preparation of the departmental budget.
- Support products through conception to delivery, including problem solving, defect maintenance, and customer service support.
- Prepare reports, manuals, procedures, and status reports.
- Support bids, proposals, and customer variation requests.
- Keep abreast of improvements and developments within software engineering techniques.
- Comply with Cubic’s Quality Management System, Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment policies, and security policies.
- Perform other duties as requested.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of ten years of related experience.
- Proven track record of leading teams and projects to meet milestones, including setting objectives, performance management, development, and cost controls.
- Result‑oriented and capable of delegating responsibility to supervisors.
- Experience in specification, design, and development of software.
- Up‑to‑date knowledge of software engineering programming languages and technologies.
- Effective decision maker with the ability to consider impact and take accountability.
- Proven problem‑solving and effective resolution skills.
- Ability to define test schedules and data requirements.
- Able to prepare reports, manuals, procedures, and status reports.
Desirable Qualifications
- Previous experience with Cubic products.
- Experience in transportation technology or a similar industry.
- Self‑motivated, pragmatic, and able to motivate and lead others.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate effectively at all levels.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to share knowledge, coach, and collaborate effectively.
- Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to handle multiple projects.
- Diligence, attention to detail, and timely resolution of problems.
- Ability to travel; may need to work occasionally at other company sites.
