Job summary

Cognizant is seeking an experienced Senior Mainframe Developer to design, develop, and maintain critical business applications on IBM Mainframe platforms. The role requires hands-on COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, VSAM, and IMS exposure, with strong debugging and stakeholder management skills.

You will collaborate with architects and project teams to deliver high-quality solutions, mentor junior developers, and produce technical design documents and procedures.

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mainframe Developer with strong expertise in IBM Mainframe technologies to design, develop, enhance, and maintain critical business applications. The ideal candidate should possess hands-on experience in COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, VSAM, and Mainframe application support and development. The role involves working closely with business stakeholders, architects, and project teams to deliver high-quality solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
• Design, develop, test, and implement Mainframe applications.
• Develop and maintain programs using COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, and IMS.
• Perform code reviews and ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices.
• Troubleshoot production issues and provide timely resolutions.
• Conduct impact analysis for application enhancements and change requests.
• Optimize application performance and database queries.
• Support batch and online processing environments.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams during project delivery.
• Prepare technical documentation, design documents, and operational procedures.
• Mentor junior developers and provide technical guidance.

Required Skills

• Strong experience in COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, VSAM.
• Good understanding of Mainframe architecture and z/OS environment.
• Experience in database design, SQL tuning, and performance optimization.
• Knowledge of batch processing, scheduling tools, and file handling.
• Experience with source control and DevOps tools in Mainframe environments.
• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Skills

• Exposure to IMS DB/DC, MQ Series, REXX, Easytrieve.
• Experience in Agile/Scrum methodologies.
• Knowledge of Mainframe modernization projects.
• Banking, Insurance, Retail, or Healthcare domain experience.
• Familiarity with tools such as Endevor, Changeman, File-AID, Abend-AID, Xpeditor.

Nice to Have

• Experience in cloud integration with Mainframe applications.
• Exposure to API integration and service-oriented architecture.
• Knowledge of automation and CI/CD practices in Mainframe environments.
