Job summary

Symmetrical Global Search is seeking a senior Java backend engineer to design, develop, and maintain payment-focused backend services and RESTful APIs. The role emphasizes scaling payment processing systems, gateway integrations, and high-throughput MySQL data handling.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot.
• Build, integrate, and optimize payment gateway workflows including authorization, capture, settlement, refunds, chargebacks, and reconciliation.
• Own payment processing logic with focus on accuracy, security, and PCI-DSS awareness.
• Design and optimize MySQL schemas, queries, and transactions for high-throughput data.
• Implement Redis caching to improve performance and reduce latency.
• Build and maintain message queue-based asynchronous processing for reliability.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, QA, DevOps, and Frontend teams to meet sprint commitments.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production payment transaction issues, ensuring reliability and data integrity.
• Deliver clean, well-documented, testable code following engineering standards.
• Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and sprint ceremonies.
• Provide regular progress updates and deliverable tracking as required.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot.
• Build, integrate, and optimize payment gateway and payment processor workflows, including authorization, capture, settlement, refunds, chargebacks, and reconciliation.
• Own payment processing logic, ensuring accuracy, security, and compliance (PCI-DSS awareness).
• Design and optimize MySQL database schemas, queries, and transactions for high-throughput payment data.
• Implement caching strategies using Redis to improve system performance and reduce latency.
• Build and maintain message queue-based asynchronous processing for reliable transaction handling.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, QA, DevOps, and Frontend teams to deliver features within agreed timelines and sprint commitments.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues related to payment transactions, prioritizing reliability and data integrity.
• Deliver clean, well-documented, and testable code adhering to engineering standards.
• Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and sprint ceremonies.

Required Qualifications & Skills

Experience

• 6 - 8 years of hands-on backend development experience in Java.
• Strong, demonstrable experience building and scaling payment processing systems.
• Extensive hands-on work with payment gateway and payment processor integrations.

Technical Skills

• Strong proficiency in Java (8/11) and Spring Boot (REST APIs, microservices architecture).
• Solid experience with MySQL schema design, query optimization, and transaction management.
• Hands-on experience with Redis for caching and performance optimization.
• Experience with message queuing systems (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ).
• Deep understanding of the payment transaction lifecycle: authorization, capture, void, refund, settlement, and reconciliation.

Preferred Skills

• Hands-on experience with the P97 payment processor.
• Hands-on experience with the Fiserv Datacap payment processing platform.
• Exposure to fuel, retail, or POS payment ecosystems.
• Familiarity with containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP).

Soft Skills

• Ability to ramp up quickly and work independently within a defined scope and timeline.
• Strong communicator, comfortable working with distributed and/or client-facing teams.
