Job summary

At Atlassian, we are seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer who is passionate about scaling Cloud services and reliability. You will join our SRE team responsible for infrastructure, tooling and automation that Jira and Confluence Cloud run on.

The ideal candidate will mentor others, have cloud experience (GCP), strong backend skills in Java/Go/Python, and a drive to improve efficiency, performance, and cost. You will report to the Senior Engineering Manager.

Qualifications

• 5+ years experience operating high-availability, fault-tolerant, scalable distributed software in production.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with public cloud offerings (at least 1 year experience on GCP).
• Familiarity with Unix / Linux operating systems.
• Strong emphasis to debug, improve code, and automate routine tasks.
• Strong backend engineering experience in one or more languages such as Java, Go or Python.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to mentor engineers.

Responsibilities

• Operate high-availability, fault-tolerant, scalable distributed software in production and build monitoring.
• Work with public cloud offerings (GCP) and define alerts/runbooks.
• Debug, improve code, and automate routine tasks to improve reliability.
• Back-end development in Java/Go/Python and related services.
• Mentor and coach engineers to grow technical capabilities.
• Communicate complex technical issues to diverse audiences.

The SRE team owns the infrastructure, tooling and automation that Jira and Confluence Cloud runs on, and has a deep understanding of how Atlassian products leverage cloud infrastructure to meet customer reliability expectations.

Overview

We are looking for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer who is passionate about scaling Cloud services to join our growing SRE team. The SRE team owns the infrastructure, tooling and automation that Jira and Confluence Cloud runs on, and has a deep understanding of how Atlassian products leverage cloud infrastructure to meet customer reliability expectations.

The ideal candidate is a technical leader who is aware of current industry trends (particularly those related to reliability). You have experience mentoring and growing team members and love to share your knowledge with others. We'd love it if you brought a deep understanding of modern Cloud infrastructure, programming expertise, operational experience and a desire to change the status quo. We’re looking for an engineer who can analyse and help improve our services and processes to get us to an even higher level of reliability, performance, scalability, and cost efficiency. You will report directly to the Senior Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities

• 5+ years experience operating high-availability, fault-tolerant, scalable, distributed software in production: building monitoring, tweaking dashboards, defining alerts, writing runbooks, etc.
• 5+ years of hands on experience with public cloud offerings (at least 1 year experience on GCP).
• Familiarity with Unix / Linux operating systems.
• Strong emphasis to debug, improve code, and automate routine tasks.
• Strong backend engineering experience in one or more prominent languages such as Java, Go or Python.
• Excellent communication skills in written and verbal forms, and an ability to communicate complex technical issues to a range of technical and non-technical audiences (management, peers, clients).
• An ability and desire to mentor and coach engineers

Qualifications

It would be great, but not mandatory if you had:

• Experience in datastores (RDBMS, time-series-database, NoSql, search, analytics).
• Experience in microservice architecture.
• Experience building web-services and clients using REST/GraphQL.
• Expertise in JVM, Garbage Collection, and Performance Tuning.
