Atlassian seeks an experienced Head of Engineering to lead a distributed department of 40–80+ engineers. You will partner with Product Management and Design to set multi-year technical strategy, execute multi-quarter OKRs, and ensure operational excellence across high-scale distributed systems.

You will guide architecture, drive organizational design, and manage Engineering Managers and senior ICs, while fostering a high-trust, inclusive culture focused on delivery and reliability.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software development and engineering management experience.
• 3+ years as a manager-of-managers, with 50+ engineers, scaling organizations.
• 5+ years building and operating large-scale SaaS/PaaS/cloud platforms in distributed environments.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Product, Design, and program leaders to define the vision, roadmap, and funded execution plans for the department.
• Build, structure, and evolve high-performing engineering teams; recruit, mentor, and coach Engineering Managers and senior technical leaders.
• Drive accountability for significant company-level and department-level OKRs, balancing feature delivery, technical debt, platform stability, and enterprise scale.
• Guide long-term architectural decisions, reliability, and security standards across multiple services in a modern cloud environment.
• Navigate cross-team dependencies, aligning platform, product, and infrastructure for win/win trade-offs.
• Foster an inclusive, high-trust engineering culture with strong bias for action and on-call hygiene.

We are looking for an experienced Head of Engineering to lead a departmental engineering organization. In this role, you will lead a distributed team of 40–80+ engineers across multiple teams, managing both Engineering Managers and Senior Staff/Principal ICs.

Operating at a department-level scope, you will partner closely with your Triad peers (Product Management and Product Design) and cross-functional partners to set multi-year technical and organizational strategy, deliver complex multi-quarter OKRs, and ensure operational excellence across high-scale distributed systems.

Qualifications

Qualifications: On Your First Day, We'll Expect You to Have

• 10+ years of software development and engineering management experience.

• 3+ years of experience as a manager-of-managers, with a proven track record of scaling organizations of 50+ engineers.

• 5+ years of experience building and operating large-scale SaaS/PaaS/cloud platforms in complex, distributed environments.

• Strategic Execution: Demonstrated experience defining and delivering on multi-quarter roadmaps and translating high-level business ambiguity into clear, funded execution plans.

• Triad & Stakeholder Collaboration: Proven ability to build influential relationships with Product, Design, and executive leadership.

• Communication: Exceptional communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and executive audiences.

• Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Great If You Have (Preferred Qualifications)

• Experience leading globally distributed teams across multiple time zones and geographies.

• Background in modern data/ML platforms, enterprise readiness, developer experience, or core platform infrastructure.

• Track record of driving continuous delivery, observability, and modern DevOps/SRE best practices at scale.
