Job summary

ACS International seeks an Information Scientist to extract, analyze, and curate diverse materials data across polymers, metals, ceramics, and semiconductors. You will collaborate with curators to ensure accuracy and database integrity, handling complex datasets from literature and patents.

You will contribute to data annotation, quality control, and the development of SOPs for efficient curation pipelines while staying updated on advances in materials informatics and ontologies.

Qualifications

• Familiar with materials databases and resources (SciFinder, PubChem, NIST).
• Domain knowledge across polymers, metals, ceramics, nanomaterials, composites, semiconductors.
• Ability to contextualize curated data across the value chain for interpretation and classification.
• Proficiency in reading chemical structures and formats (SMILES, InChI, CIF).
• Detail-oriented with strong data comprehension and summarization.
• Familiarity with ontologies: polymer, materials, reaction, and IUPAC nomenclature.
• Proficient in drafting SOPs and generating reports.

Job description

As an information scientist, you will be responsible for extracting, analyzing, and curating complex scientific data across materials science domains such as polymer chemistry, metallurgy, nanomaterials, ceramics, composites, and semiconductors, from scientific literature, patents, technical datasheets, and safety documents. You will collaborate with other curators to ensure comprehensive coverage and data quality. You will collaborate with curation teams to ensure comprehensive coverage, data quality, and database integrity supporting Research and Development across the materials sciences industry.

Position Responsibilities

• Data Curation and Extraction: Systematically search and identify relevant information including chemical structures, synthesis routes, experimental procedures, physicochemical and mechanical properties, processing parameters, and measurement data -from scientific literature, patents, TDS/SDS, regulatory/compliance documents, and scientific databases. Extract and curate data related to various matrials science domains including polymer chemistry, metallurgy, nanomaterials, ceramics, composites, and semiconductors,etc.
• Data Annotation and Analysis: Annotate curated data with materials-specific context: composition, microstructure, synthesis conditions, processing history, property measurements, and application attributes. Analyze datasets to identify trends, structure-property relationships, and cross-domain patterns.
• Data Quality Control: Implement rigorous quality control measures to ensure accuracy, consistency, and reliability of curated data. Verify data integrity and resolve discrepancies through careful review and cross-referencing across sources.
• Database Management: Contribute to the development and maintenance of comprehensive materials databases- including data entry, record updates, schema adherence, and long-term data integrity within the database system
• Process Improvement: Optimize curation workflows and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and data quality. Develop and refine SOPs and work instructions for materials curation pipelines.
• Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with curators, materials scientists, cheminformaticians, and stakeholders to align on data requirements and research objectives. Communicate complex materials science information clearly across technical and non-technical audiences.
• Staying Updated: Remain current with advances in materials informatics, curation methodologies, ontologies, and domain science. Continuously update expertise across covered materials domains.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

• Familiarity with materials science databases and resources: SciFinder, Pubchem, NIST Materials Data, TDS/SDS repositories, and regulatory/compliance datasheet
• Domain knowledge spanning polymers & plastics, metals & alloys, ceramics & glass, nanomaterials, composites, coatings, and semiconductors
• Ability to contextualize curated data across the materials value chain; from synthesis and processing to fabrication and end-use -for accurate data interpretation and classification
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting chemical structures, molfiles, SMILES, InChI, and crystallographic data (CIF files)
• The candidate is detail-oriented, understands scientific data, extracts key information, and summarizes effectively.
• Familiarity with relevant ontologies: polymer ontology, materials ontology, reaction ontology, and IUPAC nomenclature standards
• Proficient in drafting SOPs, executing work instructions, performing data analysis, and generating comprehensive reports.

Position Requirements

• Educational background: M.Sc. or M.Tech. in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Metallurgy, Nanotechnology, Chemistry, or a related field
• 2-4 years experience in scientific document curation or relevant experience.
• Sound knowledge of materials processing, structureproperty relationships, data harmonization techniques for scientific data etc.
• Must be detail oriented, well organized with ability to analyze, and communicate data effectively
• Proactively sharing knowledge and promote a culture of excellence
• Self-motivated, proactive and excellent in communication skills
• Ability to process large volumes of technical documents efficiently while maintaining high curation accuracy and consistency.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for data logging, reporting, and stakeholder communication
