Ambitious Senior Engineer – High Voltage Primary (Chennai)

Ramboll is looking for a technically ambitious and skilled electrical engineer for our Chennai location. This senior engineer will support high voltage primary design for Ramboll Energy.

Responsibilities & Tasks

• Design / review and detailed engineering for HV power lines, HV cables and onshore.
• Calculation of inductive and capacitive coupling.
• Earthing and bonding concept including calculation of touch and step voltage.
• Knowledge of fault conditions in high voltage transmission grids.
• Preparing / Reviewing of high voltage power cables, HV lines, magnetic field calculations and layouts.
• Preparing / Reviewing specifications and design of HV power system and equipment.
• Preparing man‑hour estimation for CTR preparation and review of tender documents.
• Preparation and evaluation of general project documentation.
• Coordination and follow‑up of packages with system vendors.
• Coordination with TSO and substation owner/contractor, issue and follow‑up of CSS questionnaires.
• Review / preparation and evaluation of general project documentation in addition to engineering deliverables.
• Handling multi‑discipline task‑oriented projects.
• Handling and guiding designers and draughtsmen.

Qualifications

• Master/Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, preferably High Voltage Engineering from a recognized university.
• Experience of at least 3 years in a consultancy organization.
• Experience in high voltage design and planning activities.
• 5 to 10 years of experience.
• Completed at least one offshore wind substation project, including HV side and GIS panels.
• Designing various overhead power transmission, distribution lines, cables, and magnetic field calculations for 33kV, 110kV, 132kV, 220kV, 230kV, 400kV, and 765kV.
• Experience in preparing technical specifications, design calculations, reports, drawings, and bill of materials for HV power systems.
• Experience in grounding/earthing, lightning, electromagnetic interference, and EMC analysis.
• Experience in parametric modelling of cables, transformers, and other electrical equipment in simulation tools.
• Experience in electromagnetic field calculations such as induced voltages due to nearby low and high frequency circuits.
• Experience in electromagnetic interference in HV lines and cables due to inductive, capacitive coupling with other utilities.
• Experience in insulation coordination, switch transients, and transformer energisation studies.
• Experience in calculations of step and touch voltages using FEM and IEEE 80 or relevant standards.
• Experience in planning and design of overhead powerlines, underground HV cables, substations, and grid rearrangement.
• Experience in resolving site queries, attending site meetings, and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
• Ability to effectively utilise project management tools and software to manage costs, maintain schedules, track project progress, and manage transmission line design projects.
• Experience in HVAC and HVDC transmission line design and concepts.
• Experience in COMSOL, CDEGS, PSCAD, and EMTP or similar EMF/EMT software.
• Experience in performing technical, economic, and environmental studies.
• Knowledge of various international standards for high voltage systems.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are very important and a requirement.
• Skilled user of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
• Project work within high voltage plants/stations.
• Inspection at production sites/sites of components and assembly.
• Participation in relevant tests at suppliers and at the production site/site.
• Follow‑up of quality assurance documentation.
