Job Description: Senior Engineer – Contracts & CommercialsPosition Overview
The Senior Engineer – Contracts & Commercials is responsible for managing and supporting the contractual, commercial, and engineering aspects of projects from tendering and contract award through execution and closeout. The role requires close coordination with project management, engineering, procurement, construction, finance, legal, clients, consultants, and subcontractors to protect the organization’s commercial interests, ensure contractual compliance, and support successful project delivery.
The position combines strong engineering understanding with expertise in contract administration, cost control, commercial management, claims, variations, and stakeholder coordination. The successful candidate will monitor contractual obligations, identify commercial risks and opportunities, maintain accurate project records, and provide timely recommendations to support informed business decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Contract Administration
- Review, interpret, and administer contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, and related commercial documents.
- Ensure project activities comply with contractual requirements, specifications, approved terms, and applicable procedures.
- Track key contractual obligations, milestones, deliverables, notices, approvals, and submission deadlines.
- Prepare and manage contractual correspondence, notices, acknowledgements, and formal communications.
- Support the preparation, review, and negotiation of contract terms, amendments, extensions, and supplemental agreements.
- Maintain an organized and auditable contract administration system throughout the project lifecycle.
Commercial Management
- Monitor project costs, commitments, revenues, cash flow, forecast outcomes, and commercial performance.
- Support the preparation and evaluation of interim payment applications, invoices, certifications, and final accounts.
- Review subcontractor and supplier applications for payment, variations, claims, and supporting documentation.
- Identify cost impacts, commercial risks, potential savings, and opportunities for value improvement.
- Coordinate with finance and project controls teams to ensure alignment between contractual, financial, and operational records.
- Prepare regular commercial reports, dashboards, forecasts, and management updates.
Variations and Change Management
- Identify, assess, document, and administer changes arising from revised scope, design development, site conditions, instructions, or client requirements.
- Evaluate the contractual entitlement, cost impact, time impact, and supporting evidence for variations.
- Prepare variation submissions, quotations, estimates, commercial evaluations, and recommendations for approval.
- Maintain variation logs and track changes from identification through agreement and implementation.
- Ensure approved changes are accurately reflected in budgets, forecasts, schedules, and project records.
Claims and Dispute Support
- Identify potential claims, contractual risks, delays, and entitlement issues at an early stage.
- Support the preparation, submission, review, and defense of claims relating to additional cost, extension of time, disruption, delay, acceleration, and other project impacts.
- Gather and analyze relevant records, including correspondence, instructions, drawings, programmes, progress reports, labour records, material records, and cost data.
- Coordinate with legal, planning, technical, and project teams in the development of claim narratives and substantiation.
- Assist in the resolution of commercial disagreements and support dispute avoidance and settlement initiatives.
Engineering and Project Coordination
- Review engineering deliverables, drawings, specifications, technical submissions, and scope documents to identify contractual and commercial implications.
- Work with engineering and construction teams to confirm scope alignment, deliverables, interfaces, and changes.
- Provide commercial input during design reviews, procurement activities, method planning, and project execution decisions.
- Assess the effect of technical changes on cost, programme, resources, procurement, and contractual obligations.
- Participate in project meetings, progress reviews, risk workshops, tender reviews, and coordination sessions.
Tendering and Procurement Support
- Support the review of tender documents, scopes of work, bills of quantities, specifications, schedules, and commercial conditions.
- Assist with the preparation of estimates, pricing reviews, tender clarifications, exclusions, qualifications, and commercial submissions.
- Evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations for technical compliance, commercial competitiveness, exclusions, and contractual risk.
- Support negotiations with clients, consultants, suppliers, and subcontractors to achieve commercially sound outcomes.
- Contribute to contract award recommendations and handover from tendering to project execution.
Risk, Compliance, and Governance
- Maintain contract risk and opportunity registers and recommend appropriate mitigation or exploitation actions.
- Ensure compliance with internal commercial procedures, delegation-of-authority requirements, audit standards, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Support internal and external audits by maintaining complete, accurate, and traceable documentation.
- Monitor insurance, bonds, guarantees, warranties, securities, indemnities, and other contractual requirements.
- Promote ethical, transparent, and consistent commercial practices across project teams.
Key Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Commercial Management, or a related discipline.
- Relevant experience in contracts, commercial management, project engineering, quantity surveying, or contract administration within engineering, construction, infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, or a related industry.
- Strong knowledge of contract administration principles, commercial procedures, variations, claims, payment processes, and project cost control.
- Ability to interpret technical specifications, drawings, scopes of work, schedules, bills of quantities, and contractual conditions.
- Experience preparing commercial correspondence, contractual notices, variation submissions, claims, reports, and financial forecasts.
- Strong understanding of project lifecycles, procurement processes, subcontract management, project controls, and change management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; familiarity with enterprise resource planning, contract management, document control, or project management system is desirable.
- Strong analytical, numerical, problem-solving, negotiation, communication, and report-writing skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet contractual deadlines, and work effectively with cross-functional and external stakeholders.
- High attention to detail, sound commercial judgment, and a proactive approach to identifying risks and opportunities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional certification or membership in a recognized engineering, quantity surveying, contracts, procurement, or commercial management organization.
- Knowledge of commonly used engineering and construction contract forms and standard contract administration practices.
- Experience supporting claims, dispute avoidance, delay analysis, extensions of time, or final account negotiations.
- Familiarity with project scheduling, earned value concepts, cost forecasting, and document management systems.
