We are seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join our Research, Monitoring and Evaluation team. This role involves independently extracting and optimizing data from relational databases, building state-level and public-facing Power BI dashboards, and translating complex datasets into clear, decision-ready insights for government and project stakeholders. The ideal candidate will work independently on end-to-end data workflows, mentor junior team members, and collaborate closely with the project team to ensure timely, high-quality, data‑driven decision‑making. Strong technical, analytical, communication, and coordination skills are essential for success in this role.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Independently extract data from relational databases using advanced, optimized SQL — including CTEs, sub-queries, window functions, and all types of joins.
- Independently design, build, and maintain Power BI dashboards, including public-facing dashboards, for state‑level and project stakeholders, with strong data modeling and DAX‑based measures and KPIs.
- Optimize SQL queries and Power BI data models for performance and reliability across large, production‑scale datasets.
- Clean, transform, and structure data using advanced Excel functions, Power Query, and Python (Pandas) for more complex or repetitive data processing tasks.
- Analyze data to generate periodic insights and inform strategic decision‑making.
- Present data and findings in a clear, easy‑to‑understand form for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Independently create appealing presentations and deliver them to internal teams, partners, and government stakeholders.
- Independently create data, M&E, and impact reports for specific teams and projects.
- Support and mentor junior data engineers on SQL, Power BI, and data analysis practices.
- Coordinate with the Project team and district‑level stakeholders to deliver timely, district‑wise data and reports.
- Support and institutionalize robust data management systems and processes across teams.
- Continuously upgrade technical skills and stay current with evolving data tools and best practices.
- Additional responsibilities as needed in response to evolving organizational priorities and project requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Formal training in SQL, data analytics, data engineering, or related technical tools is preferred.
- 4–5 years of relevant experience in data extraction, analysis, or dashboard development, preferably using SQL and Power BI in a production environment.
- Demonstrated experience working independently with large datasets and public‑facing dashboards.
SKILLS
Technical & Analytical
- Advanced SQL, including query optimization, CTEs, sub‑queries, and window functions, with the ability to independently design and optimize complex queries against production databases.

- Intermediate Excel: strong command of functions such as IF, COUNTIF, SUMPRODUCT, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, FILTER, and SUMIFS, along with Power Query for data cleaning and transformation.
- Working knowledge of Python (Pandas) for data analysis, automation, and building reusable data workflows.
- Understanding of database structures and relational data models.
- Understanding of data visualization and reporting best practices.
Communication & Documentation
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to compile and present findings clearly for internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Documentation and reporting skills with attention to detail.
Project & Coordination
- Ability to work independently and manage end-to-end data extraction, dashboarding, and reporting workflows.
- Ability to coordinate with multiple teams, including state‑level and district‑level stakeholders, and manage timelines for data reporting.
