About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented Data Engineer to join our Research, Monitoring and Evaluation team. This role involves extracting, cleaning, and structuring data from databases and other sources, building Power BI dashboards, and supporting the team with reliable, well-organized data and reports. The ideal candidate will work hands-on with SQL, Excel, and Power BI to turn raw program data into clear, decision-ready outputs, collaborating closely with the project team and other stakeholders. Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills are essential for success in this role.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Extract data from relational databases using SQL — including WHERE/HAVING clauses, CTEs, sub-queries, and joins — based on stakeholder and project requirements.
- Clean, transform, and structure data using Excel (functions such as IF, COUNTIF, SUMPRODUCT, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, FILTER, and SUMIFS) and Power Query to prepare analysis-ready datasets.
- Design, build, and maintain Power BI dashboards for monitoring and evaluation of various projects, including data modeling (table relationships) and calculated measures using DAX.
- Analyze data to generate periodic insights and produce data-driven reports that inform decision-making.
- Develop a strong working understanding of underlying databases and data structures, and proactively identify opportunities for data and reporting improvements.
- Prepare periodic status reports and present key findings to stakeholders and partners through clear presentations.
- Regularly compile and publish organization-level data and impact reports.
- Coordinate with the Project team to deliver timely, district-wise data and reports.
- Support and institutionalize robust data management systems and processes across teams.
- Use basic Python (Pandas) for data analysis and automation where applicable, to complement SQL and Excel workflows.
- Continuously upgrade technical skills (SQL, Excel, Power BI, Python) through self-learning and training.
- Additional responsibilities as needed in response to evolving organizational priorities and project requirements.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Formal training in SQL, data analytics, or related technical tools is preferred.
- 2–3 years of relevant experience in data extraction, analysis, or dashboard development, preferably using SQL and Power BI.
- Hands-on experience with real-world databases and reporting tools, not limited to practice on sample datasets.
- Experience working with large datasets and dashboard reporting is a plus.
Technical & Analytical
- Intermediate Excel: strong command of functions such as IF, COUNTIF, SUMPRODUCT, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, FILTER, and SUMIFS, along with Power Query for data cleaning and transformation.
- Intermediate SQL: hands-on experience (beyond sample or practice databases) with WHERE, HAVING, CTEs, sub-queries, and all types of joins; ability to understand requirements and independently design queries.
- Intermediate Power BI: proficiency in Power Query for data cleaning, data modeling for table relationships, and a working understanding of measures and basic DAX; hands-on experience building dashboards.
- Basic Python (Pandas) for data analysis is an added advantage.
- Understanding of database structures and relational data models.
- Understanding of data visualization and reporting best practices.
Communication & Documentation
- Ability to present data clearly through reports, dashboards, and presentations for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Documentation and reporting skills with attention to detail.
Project & Coordination
- Ability to coordinate with multiple teams and manage timelines for data and dashboard delivery.
- Experience supporting data collection processes and tool or database standardization.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
Soft Skills
- Adaptability and willingness to work in a dynamic team environment.
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and self-motivated.
- Ethical handling of data with respect for confidentiality and accuracy.
