Job summary

upGrad is hiring a Backend Engineer in Bengaluru. You’ll own backend problems end-to-end, design scalable systems, and collaborate across backend, frontend, and infra teams. Proficiency in Java or JavaScript/TypeScript, Spring Boot or Node.js, and strong API design are essential.

You will work on distributed systems with data modelling, SQL/NoSQL databases, and cloud platforms (AWS/GCP). The role emphasizes scalable, cost-aware engineering and AI-assisted development to improve outcomes.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of software engineering experience with strong backend fundamentals.
• Hands-on experience with Java and/or JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Production experience with Spring/Spring Boot or Node.js.
• Comfortable working across Java/Spring and Node.js when required.
• Strong understanding of APIs, distributed systems and production-grade system design.
• Experience with SQL databases, including schema design, indexing and query optimisation.
• Good understanding of NoSQL concepts such as partitioning, consistency, access patterns and data modelling.
• Experience with at least one cloud platform — AWS, GCP or equivalent.
• Ability to reason about scalability, reliability, performance, maintainability and cost.
• Strong engineering judgement and willingness to use AI effectively while validating its output.

• Collaborate across backend, frontend, infrastructure, product and other teams when required.
• Use AI for exploration, coding, debugging, testing and review while owning engineering decisions.
