About the role

The Senior Automation Engineer builds automation capability that makes 12 squads faster, reduces manual toil across Operations and Support, and acts as SarvaGram's AI enablement engine. The role requires both technical depth and leadership to run a squad, run the AI bootcamp, and evangelise automation culture across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

Squad Leadership

• Lead the Rangers squad – mentor and develop Automation Engineers, set technical direction, run sprints, and own delivery accountability to the Head of Engineering.


• Define and maintain Rangers' service catalogue – automation capabilities offered to other squads, request process, and SLA for delivery.


• Grow Rangers' impact – identify automation opportunities across all twelve squads, prioritise them, and build the case for expanding scope and capacity.


• Run the Week‑1 AI Bootcamp for all new joiners – structured introduction to Cursor, Claude, n8n, and AppSmith that makes new engineers productive with AI tools from week one.

Test Automation – Coverage & Quality

• Design and own SarvaGram’s test automation strategy for unit, integration, UI, and E2E layers.


• Build and maintain a shared test automation framework that squad engineers use.


• Implement AI‑assisted test case generation using Claude or equivalent to reduce manual test writing time by 60%+.


• Own regression testing infrastructure – automated suites that run on every merge, catch regressions before production.


• Define test data management strategy – test environment seeding, data masking, and state management across test runs.

n8n Workflow Automation

• Build and maintain n8n automations for Operations, Support, and internal engineering processes.


• Establish n8n governance – centralised workflows vs self‑serve, versioning, monitoring for failures.


• Identify and prioritise high‑value automation opportunities across all squads.


• Build the n8n template library – reusable workflow patterns for squads.

AppSmith Internal Tooling

• Build and maintain AppSmith dashboards and internal tools for self‑service use by Operations, Support, and Analytics teams.


• Establish AppSmith governance – access control, data source connections, security and maintainability standards.


• Build command‑and‑control dashboards for IT Admin and Support operations.


• Work with Analytics squad to build AppSmith‑based dashboards for field officers and collection managers.

AI Enablement Across the Organisation

• Own SarvaGram’s AI tooling standards – Cursor configuration, Claude API usage patterns, prompt engineering best practices, and AI Acceptable Use Policy.


• Run the Week‑1 AI Bootcamp for every new joiner – hands‑on sessions; ensure by end of week one new engineers shipped something using AI tools.


• Identify AI automation opportunities across squads – e.g., BRD generation, ADR drafting, sprint reporting, code review summarisation, documentation.


• Act as internal consultant for AI tool adoption – design patterns and enable implementation when squads integrate AI into workflows.

Requirements

Professional experience

• 5–8 years in test automation and engineering automation, with at least 2 years in a lead or senior I/C role.


• Built end‑to‑end test automation frameworks from scratch, understanding architecture, maintenance, and trade‑offs between coverage and speed.


• Experience using n8n, Zapier, or equivalent workflow automation tools in production – built workflows relied on daily by operations teams.


• Active AI tool user – uses Claude or equivalent for automation work today; experience with AI‑assisted test generation or automation design.


• Experience running or facilitating technical training sessions – meaningful plus.

Mindset & Soft Skills

• Automation evangelist – sees manual work as a bug to fix, proactively identifies toil and proposes solutions.


• Squad leader – comfortable owning delivery, mentoring junior engineers, making prioritisation decisions under ambiguity.


• AI‑native practitioner – reaches for Claude before opening a blank file, models AI‑augmented engineering practice.


• Platform thinker – builds reusable, documented, maintainable automation infrastructure.

Technical Skills

Test Automation – Core

• Selenium / Playwright / Cypress & API test automation (Postman / RestAssured).


• Python or JavaScript for test frameworks & CI/CD test integration.


• Test data management & Performance testing (JMeter / k6).

• n8n workflow automation & AppSmith (or equivalent no‑code/low‑code).
