Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree/diploma in Engineering, Supply Chain, Materials Management, Operations or related discipline, with 6–8 years of relevant experience.
  • Hands-on experience in scrap segregation, inventory control, vendor management, scrap sales, auctions/tenders and disposal processes.
  • Strong skills in vendor development, commercial negotiation, market-rate analysis and scrap realization.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and ERP/SAP; knowledge of environmental, waste-management or sustainability requirements is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end scrap operations, including collection, identification, segregation, weighing, storage, sale, recycling and disposal.
  • Ensure proper segregation and handling of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, packaging materials, paper/carton, wood, used oil, e-waste and other waste streams.
  • Monitor scrap accumulation and ensure timely removal to avoid excess inventory, operational hazards and value loss.
  • Identify opportunities for reuse, recycling and recovery before disposal.
  • Develop and maintain a panel of approved scrap dealers, recyclers and authorized waste disposal agencies.
  • Obtain and benchmark market rates regularly to ensure competitive realization.
  • Manage quotation, tender/auction and disposal processes in accordance with company policy.
  • Negotiate rates and commercial terms to maximize scrap realization.
  • Monitor vendor performance, documentation, payment status and compliance.
  • Ensure sale/disposal is made only to approved and authorized vendors wherever required.

Job description

The Scrap Manager will be responsible for managing the complete lifecycle of scrap and waste generated at the plant, including identification, collection, segregation, weighing, storage, inventory control, sale, recycling and final disposal. The role will focus on maximizing scrap realization, minimizing material losses and avoidable waste, ensuring proper inventory and movement controls, and maintaining compliance with applicable environmental, safety and statutory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage end-to-end scrap operations, including collection, identification, segregation, weighing, storage, sale, recycling and disposal.
  • Ensure proper segregation and handling of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, packaging materials, paper/carton, wood, used oil, e-waste and other applicable waste streams.
  • Ensure scrap is stored safely in designated areas with proper identification, segregation and housekeeping.
  • Monitor scrap accumulation and ensure timely removal to avoid excess inventory, operational hazards and value loss.
  • Identify opportunities for reuse, recycling and recovery before disposal.
2. Scrap Inventory & Process Control
  • Maintain accurate records of scrap generation, receipts, transfers, stock, sales and disposal.
  • Reconcile physical scrap quantities with system records and source departments.
  • Monitor scrap ageing and ensure timely disposal.
  • Conduct periodic physical verification and investigate stock discrepancies.
  • Establish effective controls for weighing, movement, gate passes, loading and dispatch.
  • Coordinate with Security to prevent unauthorized movement or removal of scrap.
  • Develop and maintain a panel of approved scrap dealers, recyclers and authorized waste disposal agencies.
  • Obtain and benchmark market rates regularly to ensure competitive realization.

4. Revenue & Cost Optimization
  • Maximize revenue from recyclable and saleable scrap.
  • Analyze scrap generation and realization by category, department and period.
  • Monitor realization on a per kg/MT basis and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Identify and implement measures to reduce avoidable waste, material losses and scrap-generation costs.
  • Track key operational and financial KPIs and highlight significant variances to Management.
5. Compliance, EHS & Sustainability
  • Ensure compliance with applicable environmental, waste-management, safety and statutory requirements.
  • Ensure hazardous and regulated waste is handled, stored and disposed of through approved channels.
  • Maintain required records and documentation for regulated waste streams.
  • Ensure safe scrap storage practices, appropriate PPE, housekeeping and fire-safety requirements.
  • Support initiatives for recycling, resource recovery, waste reduction and sustainability.
  • Participate in internal/external audits and ensure timely closure of identified gaps.
6. Cross-Functional Coordination
  • Coordinate with Production, Engineering/Maintenance, Stores/Warehouse and other departments for identification and transfer of scrap.
  • Work with Finance on valuation, reconciliation, sales proceeds and accounting documentation.
  • Coordinate with Procurement on vendor development and commercial processes.
  • Work with Quality and EHS teams on applicable waste-handling requirements.
  • Coordinate with Security during scrap movement, loading and dispatch.
  • Prepare periodic MIS covering scrap generation, inventory, sales, realization and disposal.
  • Analyze trends and identify abnormal or excessive scrap generation.
  • Develop and monitor relevant dashboards and KPIs for Management review.
  • Conduct regular audits of scrap storage, handling and disposal processes.
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions arising from audits or discrepancies.
  • Drive initiatives to improve recycling/recovery rates, reduce waste and increase scrap realization.
Qualification & Key Skills
  • Bachelor's degree/diploma in Engineering, Supply Chain, Materials Management, Operations, Commerce or a related discipline, with 6-8 years of relevant experience in scrap/waste management, materials, stores, warehouse or plant operations, preferably in a manufacturing/processing environment.
  • Hands-on experience in scrap segregation, inventory control, vendor management, scrap sales, auctions/tenders and disposal processes, with strong knowledge of industrial scrap and recyclable materials.
  • Strong skills in vendor development, commercial negotiation, market-rate analysis, inventory reconciliation and scrap realization.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Excel, MIS and preferably ERP/SAP, along with sound understanding of environmental, waste-management, EHS and statutory compliance requirements.
  • Ability to manage hazardous/non-hazardous waste and authorized recycler/disposal processes; relevant EHS, environmental, waste-management or sustainability certification/training will be an advantage.
  • Strong analytical, communication, coordination, problem-solving and process-improvement skills, with high integrity, ownership and attention to detail.
