REPORTS TO: Road Supervisor

RATE OF PAY: $26.88 per hour/40 hours per week (under collective bargaining)

Summary

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) responsible for road and bridge maintenance and construction work involving, on a continuing basis, the safe, efficient, and highly skilled operation of heavy road and bridge maintenance equipment and the performance of manual work. Work of this class is distinguished by the higher skill level necessary to perform the more difficult operations for which the equipment is used, and/or significantly increased responsibility for the safety of employees working near or in conjunction with assigned equipment. Work requires the employee to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in the performance and completion of assignments. This classification is characterized by the highly skilled operation, on a continuing basis, of the following equipment: road grader, bulldozers, backhoe, chip spreader, distributor, loaders, truck-trailer combinations, and weed sprayer. Work is normally performed in the cab of assigned equipment or outdoors in all weather conditions. Work is performed under the daily supervision of the Road Foreman who reviews work intermittently during performance and upon completion for conformance with established procedures and standards.

Examples Of Duties

• Operates a road grader for obtaining road surface contour and finish grading to blue tops.
• Operates a backhoe to clean culverts, ditches, etc.
• Operates specialized equipment such as weed sprayer, chip spreader, and oil distributor to obtain desired results.
• Operates a bulldozer moving large volumes of rock, sand, or stone; cuts and fills land surfaces; or pulls an earthmover in construction, repair and/or maintenance of county roads.
• Operates a loader to perform skilled grade alignment on ditches; loads and moves gravel, rock, dirt, snow, and other materials; loads materials on double and single axle trucks.
• Performs services and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment; assists mechanic in the completion of repairs as required.
• Performs a variety of manual road and bridge maintenance and construction assignments.
• Operates a weed sprayer and/or spray truck on a seasonal/periodic basis to apply herbicides in the County Right-of-Way in accordance with Washington State Department of Agriculture regulations.
• Operates mowing equipment to maintain roadside vegetation.
• Operates equipment and/or performs required labor tasks to maintain a bare zone for roadside fire protection.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of the care, maintenance, and safe operation of assigned equipment.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.
• Ability to operate equipment with a high level of skill; operate equipment safely, and in conformance with applicable laws, procedures, and standards.
• Ability to operate a road grader to finish grade.
• Ability to detect needed repairs and to make necessary adjustments and minor repairs to equipment.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions, and to work independently in the performance of regular working duties.
• Ability to comply with Washington State Department of Agriculture herbicide regulations.

Essential Functions

• Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language.
• Ability to work early or late shifts in harsh environments, including heat, cold and/or work late around temperatures and impending winds. Shifts vary seasonally from 8 hour days/5 days per week to 10 hour days/4 days per week.
• Ability to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time. Physical movements include reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and pulling.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds occasionally.
• Ability to perform job functions in situations that require the use of personal protective equipment determined to be necessary to the safe performance of the specific job task.

Experience, Education, And Training

• Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Any combination of experience, education, and training which would provide the level of knowledge and abilities required to perform duties.
• Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in the State of Washington and ability to maintain throughout the duration of employment.
• Possession of a Public Operator License through the Washington State Department of Agriculture or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire and throughout the duration of employment.
• Possession of a Washington Traffic Control Flagger’s Card or ability to obtain within three (3) months of hire.
• Must demonstrate the ability to operate a minimum of three equipment types in this class proficiently before advancing to higher pay step.
