Position Overview
We are seeking a Power System Engineer to lead simulation modelling, benchmarking, and real-time validation of Power Plant Controllers (PPC), Master Power Plant Controllers (MPPC), and Energy Management System (EMS) controllers for Renewable Power Plants - Solar, Wind, BESS, and Hybrid/Master-structure configurations. The role combines offline simulation modelling, SIL/HIL testing, real-time system validation, and grid-code compliance reporting, with close coordination across internal teams, clients, test labs, and regional/national grid authorities.
Key Responsibilities :
- Develop and maintain PPC, MPPC, and EMS controller simulation models for Solar, Wind, BESS, and Hybrid renewable power plants, including case-specific Master Controller structures.
- Model plant and controller behaviour in PSS®E, PSCAD, and MATLAB/Simulink to represent RMS and EMT (fast transient/harmonic) dynamics as applicable.
- Implement and validate control logic including droop control, frequency response services (PFR/FFR), ROCOF-based triggers, voltage/reactive power control, SoC-based dispatch, and dead-band/ramp-rate behaviour.
- Translate grid code and client technical requirements into simulation model specifications and control logic design documents.
SIL / HIL Testing
- Plan, execute, and coordinate Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing with internal test benches and external test laboratories.
- Configure and operate real-time simulation platforms such as RTDS and OPAL-RT/HYPERSIM to interface simulated plant models with real PPC/MPPC/EMS hardware.
- Validate controller performance against grid code requirements (e.g., CEA Grid Code, IEGC) under both SIL and HIL environments.
- Prepare detailed SIL/HIL test procedures, test case matrices, and structured test reports.
Real-Time System & Protocol Integration
- Work on real-time control systems in line with simulation models, ensuring consistency between simulated and deployed controller behaviour.
- Configure, test, and troubleshoot communication interfaces using Modbus (TCP/RTU), IEC 60870-5-104, and IEC 61850 MMS between controllers, RTUs/gateways, inverters, BESS, and SCADA/DAS systems.
- Support conformance and interoperability testing of protocol implementations against OEM inverter, BESS, and RTU/gateway systems.
Field Testing & Benchmarking
- Coordinate and support site commissioning tests for PPC, MPPC, and EMS systems on operating renewable plants.
- Acquire, validate, and analyse real-time site test data against simulation model outputs.
- Prepare Benchmark Reports comparing site test data with SIL/HIL simulation results, identifying and documenting deviations with root-cause analysis.
Regulatory & Stakeholder Coordination
- Prepare NLDC/SRLDC test reports for PPC, MPPC, and EMS projects, presenting real-time test data validated against simulation results, per applicable grid code and regulatory formats.
- Coordinate with government/regional grid agencies (SRLDC, NLDC, RLDC, SLDC as applicable) for test scheduling, data submission, clarifications, and approvals.
- Liaise with internal cross-functional teams (design, protection, SCADA, project execution) and external stakeholders (clients, OEMs, test labs, consultants) to align on technical requirements and project timelines.
- Support internal and external technical audits, witness testing, and third-party certification processes as required.
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain structured technical documentation: model files, test procedures, benchmark reports, and simulation-to-site validation records for traceability and audit readiness.
- Track evolving grid code requirements (CEA, CERC, and regional variations) and update simulation models and test methodologies accordingly.
- Contribute to internal knowledge base and best practices for PPC/MPPC/EMS modelling and testing methodology.
- Provide technical mentoring/support to junior engineers on modelling tools, protocols, and test procedures.
Required Qualifications:
Education
- Master's degree in Power Systems Engineering or related Electrical Engineering discipline (preferred). Bachelor's degree with strong relevant experience may also be considered.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in PSS®E modelling and simulation.
- Proficiency in PSCAD modelling and simulation.
- Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink modelling.
- Working knowledge of Python for data analysis, automation, and test orchestration.
- Experience with RTDS and/or OPAL-RT (HYPERSIM) real-time simulation platforms is preferred.
- Familiarity with communication protocols — Modbus, IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 61850 MMS — is preferred.
- Understanding of grid code requirements applicable to renewable generation (CEA Grid Code, frequency response services, ROCOF, voltage ride-through, reactive power/droop requirements).
Other Attributes
- Strong analytical skills with ability to interpret and correlate simulation and real-time site data.
- Clear technical report writing and documentation skills for regulatory submissions (NLDC/SRLDC formats).
- Effective communicator, comfortable coordinating across internal teams, clients, test labs, and grid agencies.
- Willingness to travel to site locations and test laboratories as required.
