Avaada Energy is seeking a Lead Mechanical Commodity Manager to supervise end-to-end quality assurance for solar and wind mechanical packages. You will establish supplier quality plans, review MQP/QAP/ITP, and lead QA/QC teams across factories and sites to ensure compliance with engineering specs and safety standards.

The role requires extensive experience in mechanical QA/QC within renewable-energy projects, with focus on NDT, welding inspection, and critical interfaces.

Job description

Lead end-to-end Supply Quality Assurance and inspection of mechanical commodities for Solar and Wind projects, ensuring compliance with approved engineering specifications, drawings, MQP/QAP/ITP, applicable national and international standards, contractual requirements and defined quality, reliability and safety objectives.

Primary Responsibilities
Strategic Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement commodity-wise quality strategy, inspection philosophy, CTQ/critical inspection parameters and supplier quality plans for Solar & Wind mechanical packages.
  • Establish supplier qualification, capability assessment, risk classification, performance rating and supplier development framework for critical mechanical commodities.
  • Drive prevention of defects, cost of poor quality reduction, lessons learned and continual improvement across the supply chain.
  • Provide technical quality inputs to Engineering, Procurement and Projects for specifications, PO quality clauses, approved vendor requirements and quality risk mitigation.
Operational Responsibilities
  • Lead inspection and quality control of Solar MMS/fixed structures, tracker mechanical systems, structural/fabricated items, fencing and associated mechanical components.
  • Lead inspection of Wind mechanical packages including tower sections/flanges, hub, main shaft, bearings, gearbox, nacelle/bedplate, yaw and other critical mechanical interfaces, as applicable to the project.
  • Review and approve MQP/QAP/ITP, inspection checklists, method statements, sampling plans, acceptance criteria, hold/witness points and final quality dossiers.
  • Ensure control of raw material, MTC/traceability, fabrication, machining, welding, heat treatment, NDT, dimensional inspection, galvanizing/coating, assembly, functional/FAT and packing/preservation.
  • Review drawings, specifications, BOMs, revisions and tolerances; identify CTQs and technically challenge deviations/non-conforming conditions.
  • Ensure timely inspection disposition, release/hold decisions, NCR containment, root-cause analysis, CAPA/8D and effective closure of supplier quality issues.
  • Coordinate factory inspections, third-party inspection agencies, supplier QA/QC teams and project/site teams from manufacturing through dispatch and site receipt/installation.
  • Monitor supplier quality KPIs, inspection performance, NCR trends, rework/rejection, delivery-quality risk and provide management dashboards/reports.
People & Stakeholder Responsibilities
  • Plan and manage third-party QA manpower/inspection resources; assess inspector competency and monitor performance.
  • Mentor QA/QC engineers and inspectors and build technical competency in mechanical inspection and supplier quality.
  • Work closely with Procurement, Engineering, SCM, Construction, Projects, Vendors and Clients for timely resolution of technical quality issues.
  • Lead quality reviews, supplier meetings, escalations and grievance/conflict resolution related to inspection and quality.
Financial / Commercial Responsibilities
  • Optimize inspection resources and QA cost while maintaining risk-based quality assurance coverage.
  • Provide technical inputs for quality-related PO/contract conditions, inspection liabilities, rejection/replacement, re-inspection and warranty/performance requirements.
MECHANICAL COMMODITY MANAGER / SR. MANAGER COMPETENCY STANDARD
Core Technical Expertise
  • Solar Mechanical: MMS/fixed structures, tracker systems, torque tubes, posts/rafters/purlins/bracing, bolted joints, structural accessories, fencing and fabricated supports.
  • Wind Mechanical: tower sections/flanges, hub, main shaft, bearings, gearbox, nacelle/bedplate, yaw system, brake/coupling and critical mechanical interfaces.
  • Fabrication & Welding: process control, WPS/PQR/WPQ, welding consumables, preheat/interpass, weld visual/dimensional inspection, repair/rework and traceability.
  • NDT & Testing: VT, UT, RT, PT, MT/MPI, PMI, hardness and other applicable destructive/non-destructive tests; review procedures, reports and acceptance results.
  • Materials & Metallurgy: carbon/structural/alloy/stainless steels, forgings, castings, plates, fasteners, heat treatment, mechanical properties, material traceability and corrosion control.
  • Galvanizing & Coating: HDG process, coating thickness/visual acceptance, surface preparation, DFT, repair and preservation requirements.
  • Dimensional & Metrology: drawing tolerances, dimensional control, alignment, straightness, flatness, runout, calibration and use of relevant measuring instruments.
  • Bolting/Fasteners: grades, coatings, traceability, torque/preload, calibrated tools, tightening sequence and critical joint verification.
  • Site Mechanical Quality: incoming inspection, erection/installation quality, alignment, torque verification, damage/deformation, punch-point closure and pre-commissioning quality checks.
Quality System & Supplier Management
  • Strong working knowledge of ISO 9001, supplier audits, process/product audits, QMS assessment, risk-based inspection, vendor rating and supplier development.
  • Proficiency in NCR, RCA, 5-Why, Fishbone, 8D, CAPA, FMEA, Pareto, SPC/Six Sigma and continual improvement methodologies.
  • Ability to establish quality gates from supplier qualification to manufacturing, FAT, dispatch, site receipt, installation and commissioning.
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant IS, ASTM, ISO, AWS, ASME, EN/DIN, IEC and project/client specifications as applicable to the commodity.

Qualification & Experience
  • Essential: B.E./B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Manager: typically 1014 years; Sr. Manager: typically 1418+ years in Supply Quality, Mechanical QA/QC, inspection, EPC, manufacturing or renewable-energy projects.
  • Preferred exposure to Solar and Wind mechanical commodities, supplier manufacturing and multi-location project execution.
  • Preferred certifications: ISO 9001 Lead Auditor/Internal Auditor, ASNT/PCN Level-II NDT, welding inspection and Six Sigma/quality problem-solving certifications.
Knowledge, Skills & Technology Platform
  • Expertise in mechanical drawings, specifications, BOM, manufacturing processes, inspection documentation and quality dossiers.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, communication, stakeholder-management and decision-making skills; ability to take evidence-based accept/reject decisions.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), quality/inspection management systems and data-driven KPI reporting.
  • Ability to work across factories and project sites and manage quality priorities under schedule and commercial pressure.

  • Supplier quality performance, incoming/rejection rate and first-pass acceptance.
  • NCR recurrence, CAPA effectiveness and closure cycle time.
  • Inspection plan adherence, timely disposition and zero critical quality escapes.
