1. Job Purpose

The Purchase Manager will be responsible for managing end-to-end procurement activities for steel and related products, developing reliable supplier networks, negotiating competitive prices, and ensuring timely procurement to meet business requirements. The role requires strong knowledge of the steel industry, market pricing, vendor management, purchase planning, and cost optimization.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Procurement & Purchase Management

• Manage end-to-end purchasing activities for steel, iron & steel products, and other business-related materials.
• Source steel products such as TMT bars, MS plates, HR/CR coils, structural steel, channels, angles, beams, and other relevant steel materials.
• Identify procurement requirements based on customer orders, sales forecasts, and business demand.
• Ensure timely procurement of materials at competitive prices while maintaining required quality standards.
• Prepare and process purchase orders, quotations, and procurement documentation.
• Monitor purchase orders and coordinate with suppliers to ensure timely material availability and delivery.
• Identify, evaluate, and onboard new suppliers, steel manufacturers, stockists, service centres, and distributors.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing vendors.
• Evaluate suppliers based on pricing, quality, delivery timelines, reliability, and credit terms.
• Maintain an updated supplier database with product availability, commercial terms, and contact details.
• Conduct regular vendor performance reviews and resolve procurement-related issues.

C. Price Negotiation & Cost Optimization

• Negotiate purchase prices, payment terms, credit periods, transportation costs, and delivery schedules.
• Track daily steel market prices, manufacturer price revisions, and regional market trends.
• Compare supplier quotations and prepare comparative statements for management approval.
• Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising material quality or delivery commitments.
• Monitor price fluctuations and support management in procurement planning and purchasing decisions.
• Maintain updated knowledge of steel market trends, demand and supply conditions, and regional pricing.
• Track price movements from major steel manufacturers, mills, stockists, and traders.
• Develop a strong supplier network across Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and other relevant markets.
• Analyse market conditions to identify suitable procurement opportunities.
• Provide regular updates to management on pricing trends, supplier availability, and market developments.

E. Inventory & Supply Chain Coordination

• Coordinate with sales, logistics, warehouse, and finance teams to ensure smooth procurement operations.
• Plan material purchases based on confirmed orders, stock availability, and expected demand.
• Avoid unnecessary inventory accumulation, material shortages, and procurement delays.
• Coordinate transportation and delivery schedules with suppliers and logistics partners.
• Follow up on material quality, quantity discrepancies, delivery delays, and supplier claims.

F. Documentation & Payment Coordination

• Ensure accurate maintenance of purchase orders, supplier quotations, invoices, and procurement records.
• Coordinate with the finance team for invoice verification, payment processing, and supplier reconciliations.
• Monitor supplier credit terms and payment schedules.
• Ensure compliance with internal procurement policies and approval procedures.
• Prepare regular purchase reports, cost analyses, and supplier performance reports.

3. Educational Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline.
• MBA in Supply Chain Management, Materials Management, or Operations will be an added advantage.

4. Experience & Technical Requirements

• 6–8 years of experience in purchase, procurement, or materials management.
• Mandatory experience in the steel / iron & steel industry.
• Strong understanding of steel products, grades, specifications, pricing, and market dynamics.
• Experience in supplier development, commercial negotiations, and purchase order management.
• Knowledge of inventory planning, logistics coordination, and procurement documentation.
• Proficiency in MS Excel, ERP systems, and purchase management software.
• Strong negotiation and commercial decision-making skills.
• Excellent vendor management and relationship-building abilities.
• Analytical skills for price comparison and cost evaluation.
• Good communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple procurement requirements and meet deadlines.
• Strong understanding of purchase documentation and internal approval processes.
• Knowledge of the Visakhapatnam and Andhra Pradesh steel markets will be preferred.
• Ability to work independently and coordinate effectively with cross-functional teams.
