Job summary

Aga Khan Rural Support Programme India (AKRSP India) seeks a Programme Specialist – Livestock to lead and provide technical guidance for livestock-based livelihoods, productivity, and animal health in the assigned region.

The role requires strong expertise in breeding, fodder development, dairy and small ruminant management, and value chains, with responsibility to support field teams and donors.

Qualifications

  • BVSc & AH or MVSc/BSc/MSc in Animal Husbandry or Veterinary Science
  • Minimum 5+ years managing entrepreneurship and livelihood projects with rural communities, especially focusing on women and youth
  • Strong field facilitation, coordination with government departments, veterinary institutions, and NGOs

Responsibilities

  • Liaise with donors, veterinary departments, and government missions for programme coordination and support
  • Provide technical and managerial support to field teams implementing livestock projects
  • Facilitate training and capacity-building programmes for field staff, Pashu Sakhis, dairy groups, and partner organisations (GO-NGO)
  • Develop programme manuals, training modules, and assessment tools to strengthen programme effectiveness
  • Prepare SOPs, strategies, and frameworks for livestock-based livelihood interventions
  • Plan and implement sustainable livestock practices (breeds, fodder, deworming, vaccination, housing, disease prevention)
  • Strengthen livestock value chains, dairy market linkages, and enterprise development models
  • Document success stories, case studies, and technical notes for internal learning and donor reporting
  • Draft project proposals and contribute to strategic planning for livestock and rural livelihoods
  • Promote integration of breed improvement, ration balancing, AI services, and preventive healthcare
  • Collaborate with veterinary colleges, KVKs, livestock universities, NGOs, and technical organisations
  • Ensure timely and accurate donor reporting in English with support from field and monitoring teams

Job description

Aga Khan Rural Support Programme India (AKRSP India) is a non-denominational, non-political, non-government organization. AKRSP India was established in 1983 and it seeks to contribute to rural poverty reduction through community involvement and empowerment that leads to efficient management and an improved environment.

Position Summary:

The Programme Specialist – Livestock will be responsible for leading and providing technical guidance for the effective implementation of livestock-based livelihood, productivity enhancement, and animal health programmes in the assigned region.

The role demands strong technical expertise in livestock management, improved breeding practices, fodder development, dairy and small ruminant management, and livestock value chains. The Specialist should have proven experience in field-level programme execution, capacity building, and coordination with multiple stakeholders including veterinary departments, donors, research institutions, and community-based organisations.

The incumbent will also contribute to developing strategies, project proposals, monitoring systems, and documentation of field learnings to enhance programme quality and impact.

Job Description:

Education Qualification:

B.V.Sc & A.H. / M.V.Sc. / B.Sc. / M.Sc. in Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Science, or related field.

Minimum 5+ years of experience in managing entrepreneurship and livelihood development projects with rural communities, especially focusing on women and youth.
