About the Role

The Principal Software Engineer is the senior‑most hands‑on technical leader for a bounded domain that typically spans 2–4 delivery teams. The role sets the technical direction, governs domain architecture, and acts as a force multiplier, enabling teams to deliver secure, reliable, maintainable, and cost‑effective solutions on AWS that meet business outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Engineering Leadership & Culture

  Foster an environment where engineers can excel by removing blockers, improving engineering practices, mentoring senior engineers and tech leads, and cultivating psychological safety and high standards. Drive knowledge sharing through tech talks, playbooks, templates, and reference implementations. Participate in hiring and onboarding, provide hands‑on contributions on prototypes, refactors, and high‑risk changes, and guide teams in decomposition, sequencing, estimation, and technical discovery.

• Product & Domain Leadership

  Own the domain technical roadmap for 12–24 months in partnership with product and engineering leadership, aligning investments with business priorities, platform strategy, security posture, reliability targets, and cost optimisation. Identify and retire technical risk, recommend buy vs. build decisions, evaluate 3rd‑party vendors, and support product teams to simplify complexity and deliver scalable solutions.

• Technical Excellence & Innovation

  Maintain a high technical bar, own the domain reference architecture and integration patterns, define domain boundaries, service responsibilities, and reduce coupling. Work with other principals to evolve domain technical standards and governance, create reusable libraries and “golden paths”, and ensure solutions meet non‑functional requirements and maintainability.

• Operational Excellence

  Define and drive adoption of SLIs/SLOs, operational dashboards, and reliability practices. Lead incident response, conduct blameless post‑mortems, and drive systemic improvements. Establish capacity planning, resilience testing, and disaster‑recovery validation, automate monitoring, and optimise cloud cost through FinOps mind‑set.

Qualifications

• Proven senior technical leadership across multiple teams or services within a bounded domain.
• Strong polyglot background (C#/.NET, Java, JavaScript/Node) and ability to select fit‑for‑purpose technologies.
• Experience modernising systems: migrating legacy architectures to cloud‑native patterns, reducing technical debt, and decommissioning safely.
• Hands‑on system analysis, design, and understanding of development, QA and integration methodologies.
• Evaluation of third‑party services and platforms, including security, cost, operations, and integration complexity.
• Leading cross‑team architectural change, platform adoption, or measurable improvements to reliability, cost, or performance (with before/after metrics).
• Familiarity with responsible AI usage in engineering workflows.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science (or related) or equivalent professional experience.

Technical Skills

• Expertise in SOLID, DDD, event‑driven architecture, modular design, and maintainable codebases.
• Judgement in trade‑offs: simplicity vs extensibility, performance vs cost, consistency vs availability.
• Distributed systems fundamentals: idempotency, retries/backoff, timeouts, circuit breakers, backpressure, eventual consistency, and data partitioning.
• API and event design governance: versioning, schema evolution, backward compatibility, and contract testing.
• Design and delivery of secure, scalable, and resilient AWS‑based solutions, covering IAM, networking, integration patterns, reliability, and cost optimisation.
• Infrastructure‑as‑Code, immutable infrastructure, automated provisioning, secure architecture patterns, threat modelling, and OWASP Top10 & software supply chain security awareness.
• Strong testing strategy leadership: unit, integration, contract, performance, and security testing, with TDD/BDD where appropriate and measurable coverage.
• Observability and SRE principles: SLIs/SLOs, incident response, continuous reliability improvement, and fleet management.
• CI/CD pipelines, deployment safety patterns, source control, code review, and automation.
