1. Job Purpose
The PhD professional in the Histology Department will be responsible for providing scientific and technical expertise in histological processing, tissue preparation, staining, microscopic evaluation, quality assurance, and laboratory research activities.
The role requires strong knowledge of histological techniques, tissue morphology, laboratory quality systems, and diagnostic workflows, with a focus on maintaining accuracy, consistency, patient safety, and compliance with applicable laboratory standards.
2. Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and perform advanced histological tissue processing, fixation, dehydration, clearing, paraffin embedding, sectioning, and slide preparation.
- Ensure proper handling and processing of biopsy, surgical and tissue specimens received by the Histology Department.
- Perform and supervise routine and special staining procedures, including H&E, PAS, Masson's Trichrome, Reticulin, Congo Red, and other relevant special stains.
- Support and supervise immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures, where applicable, including specimen preparation, staining protocols, controls, and quality verification.
- Evaluate tissue sections microscopically for quality, adequacy, staining consistency, and morphological preservation.
- Maintain appropriate documentation, records, worksheets, and laboratory reports in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Develop, review, and implement SOPs, work instructions, quality protocols, and technical procedures related to histology.
- Monitor critical laboratory parameters and identify deviations, errors, or inconsistencies in tissue processing and staining.
- Conduct root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventive actions (CAPA) for technical or quality-related issues.
- Ensure proper calibration, maintenance, and performance monitoring of histology equipment, including tissue processors, embedding stations, microtomes, water baths, staining systems, and related instruments.
- Ensure appropriate handling, labeling, storage, and archival of tissue blocks and histology slides.
- Maintain proper sample traceability and documentation throughout the histopathology workflow.
- Support internal quality audits and external accreditation/audit requirements.
- Participate in laboratory quality assurance and quality control programs and contribute to continual improvement initiatives.
- Train, guide, and technically supervise laboratory staff, technicians, and junior team members.
- Conduct technical training on histology procedures, staining techniques, equipment handling, and quality requirements.
- Support research and development activities involving tissue morphology, histological techniques, diagnostic methodologies, and laboratory processes.
- Evaluate and introduce improved techniques and methodologies to enhance laboratory efficiency and diagnostic quality.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety requirements, biomedical waste management procedures, and applicable regulatory guidelines.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information, laboratory records, research data, and organizational information.
- Coordinate with pathologists, laboratory scientists, technicians, and other departments to ensure smooth and timely workflow.
- Handle technical escalations and provide scientific inputs for resolving complex histology-related issues.
3. Quality & Compliance
The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that all histology activities are performed in accordance with:
- Laboratory-approved SOPs and work instructions.
- Quality Management System (QMS) requirements.
- Applicable NABL and other relevant accreditation requirements.
- Internal quality control and quality assurance procedures.
- Laboratory safety and biomedical waste management protocols.
- Good laboratory practices and ethical standards.
4. Research & Scientific Responsibilities
- Design, support, and document research projects related to histology and tissue-based laboratory science.
- Analyze experimental and laboratory data and prepare technical observations/reports.
- Contribute to scientific publications, presentations, technical documentation, and research projects where applicable.
- Evaluate new staining methods, reagents, technologies, and laboratory processes.
- Maintain appropriate research documentation and ensure reproducibility of laboratory procedures.
5. Team Management & Coordination
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to Histology Department staff.
- Monitor adherence to departmental procedures and workflow requirements.
- Identify training requirements and recommend appropriate skill-development programs.
- Coordinate with the reporting manager regarding workload, staffing, equipment, consumables, and technical requirements.
- Promote a culture of accuracy, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
6. Required Qualification
Essential:
- PhD in Histology / Histopathology / Life Sciences / Biomedical Sciences / Medical Sciences or a closely related discipline.
- Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of histological techniques and tissue processing.
Preferred:
- Relevant experience in a diagnostic laboratory, research laboratory, histopathology laboratory, academic institution, or healthcare organization.
- Knowledge of IHC, special staining, tissue processing, microscopy, laboratory quality systems, and research methodology.
