Job Description:
Performance Test Engineer (8-10 years experience)
Performance engineering & strategy
Key Responsibilities
- Define the performance test strategy aligned to non-functional requirements (NFRs), SLAs/SLOs, and production usage patterns.
- Establish performance baselines and capacity thresholds; create a repeatable approach for load, stress, endurance/soak, spike, and scalability testing.
- Shape performance acceptance criteria early in the SDLC (shift-left), influencing architecture and design decisions. Test design, scripting & execution
- Analyse requirements, production telemetry, and user journeys to model realistic workloads (mix models, concurrency, pacing, think time).
- Build and maintain performance test scripts and frameworks using tools such as Loadrunner / performance center and JMeter
- Configure and run tests across environments, coordinating dependencies (test data, stubs/mocks, third parties, schedules). Monitoring, analysis & optimisation
- Instrument and monitor application and infrastructure during tests (APM/logs/metrics) to capture response times, throughput, errors, CPU/memory/GC, DB performance, network, and queue behaviour.
- Perform root-cause analysis and produce actionable recommendations (SQL tuning, caching, thread pools, connection pools, API/HTTP tuning, JVM/.NET settings, cloud scaling).
- Validate fixes with re-tests and provide performance sign-off for releases. Automation & CI/CD
- Integrate performance tests into CI/CD pipelines for smoke/baseline performance checks and trend analysis.
- Implement performance regression detection and reporting dashboards; maintain reusable libraries and standards. Stakeholder management & governance
- Communicate results clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including risks and release readiness.
- Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices (coding standards for scripts, review processes, environment readiness checklists).
- Contribute to performance governance: NFR reviews, capacity planning input, and incident post-mortems (where performance-related).
Required Skills and experience
- Strong hands-on experience delivering performance testing for distributed systems (microservices/API-driven, event-based, or legacy n-tier).
- Proven expertise in at least one performance tool: Loadrunner / performance center and JMeter
- Solid understanding of performance metrics and analysis: latency percentiles (p95/p99), throughput, saturation points, error budgets.
- Strong technical foundation in:
- HTTP/REST, messaging/queues, caching, load balancing
- Database performance (SQL profiling, indexing concepts, connection pooling)
- OS/process basics, networking fundamentals, and capacity/scaling concepts
- Experience with monitoring/observability tools such as Dynatrace, AppDynamics, New Relic, Splunk, ELK, Prometheus/Grafana (any mix).
- Scripting/programming proficiency (one or more): React, Java, JavaScript, Python
- CI/CD and automation exposure: **Jenkins/GitLab CI/GCP DevOps, version control (Git), container/cloud familiarity (Docker/Kubernetes, GCP helpful).
Good to have
- Performance engineering in cloud-native environments (autoscaling, managed databases, service meshes).
- Chaos/resilience testing awareness (timeouts, retries, circuit breakers) and non-functional testing beyond performance (stability, reliability).
- Experience with SRE practices, SLOs, and production performance tuning.
