Job summary

Iquest Management Consultants is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer - Rotary to lead and execute engineering activities for rotating equipment in major EPC projects across Oil & Gas, Refinery and Petrochemical sectors. You will review design baselines, vendor documents, and perform bid evaluations.

The role requires strong knowledge of rotating equipment, API/ASME standards, and multidisciplinary coordination. Experience with FAT, commissioning, and start-up is valuable.

Qualifications

  • BE/B.Tech. or ME/M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Specialization/exposure in Rotating Equipment is preferred.
  • 8-12 years of relevant Mechanical (Rotary) Engineering experience in Oil & Gas, Refinery or related industries.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Basic Engineering, FEED, and Detailed Engineering for rotating equipment.
  • Develop and review equipment datasheets, specifications, and requisitions.
  • Review vendor drawings, documents, and PFDs to ensure compliance with codes and standards.
  • Coordinate with Piping, Electrical, Instrumentation, Procurement and other disciplines for integrated design.
  • Perform Technical Bid Evaluations and support FAT, commissioning and start-up.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support development of the Mechanical/Rotary team.

Job Description
Qualification

B.E./B.Tech. or M.E./M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering, preferably with specialization/exposure in Rotating Equipment.

Experience

812 years of relevant experience in Mechanical (Rotary) Engineering with leading and reputed Engineering / EPC companies operating in Oil & Gas, Refinery, Petrochemical, Chemical, Fertilizer, Energy, Power, Renewable Energy, and related industries.

Software Proficiency

Good working knowledge of AutoCAD/MicroStation, MS Office, and relevant rotating equipment engineering tools. Familiarity with AVEVA E3D/PDMS/SP3D, Navisworks, vibration analysis software, and equipment performance/selection software will be an added advantage.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and execute Basic Engineering, FEED, and Detailed Engineering activities related to rotating equipment.
  • Develop and review Rotating Equipment Design Basis, specifications, datasheets, requisitions, technical documents, and engineering deliverables.
  • Handle engineering activities for major rotating equipment including:
  • Centrifugal and reciprocating compressors
  • Centrifugal and reciprocating pumps
  • Steam turbines and gas turbines
  • Expanders
  • Fans and blowers
  • Gearboxes
  • Agitators/mixers
  • Other packaged rotating equipment.
  • Review Client specifications, project design basis, applicable codes, standards, statutory requirements, and vendor requirements, and incorporate them into equipment design and procurement documentation.
  • Prepare and review Equipment Datasheets, Technical Specifications, Material Requisitions, Technical Bid Evaluations (TBE), Vendor Document Requirements (VDR), and purchase specifications.
  • Perform technical evaluation of vendor offers and prepare Technical Bid Evaluations in coordination with Process, Piping, Electrical, Instrumentation, Procurement, and other disciplines.
  • Review and approve Vendor Drawings and Documents (VDD), including:
  • General Arrangement drawings
  • Certified drawings
  • Performance curves
  • Cross-sectional drawings
  • Foundation loads
  • Nozzle loads
  • Utility requirements
  • Lubrication systems
  • Seal systems
  • Coupling and driver details
  • Instrumentation documents
  • Inspection and Test Plans.
  • Review rotating equipment performance requirements, including capacity, head/pressure, efficiency, power consumption, speed, operating envelope, turndown, and other design parameters.
  • Review and coordinate pump system requirements, including NPSH, minimum flow, pump curves, operating cases, hydraulic requirements, and pump selection.
  • Review and coordinate compressor systems, including compressor performance, anti-surge requirements, recycle systems, operating cases, driver requirements, and auxiliary systems.
  • Review mechanical seals, dry gas seals, bearing systems, lubrication systems, seal oil systems, cooling systems, and auxiliary equipment associated with rotating machinery.
  • Coordinate with Piping Engineering for equipment layout, piping arrangement, nozzle orientation, piping flexibility, piping loads, maintenance access, and equipment accessibility.
  • Review allowable nozzle loads and coordinate with Piping/Stress Engineering to ensure that equipment nozzle loads are within vendor and applicable code limits.
  • Coordinate with Civil & Structural Engineering regarding equipment foundation requirements, static/dynamic loads, anchor bolt arrangements, equipment supports, vibration isolation, and foundation design.
  • Coordinate with Electrical and Instrumentation & Control disciplines regarding motor/driver requirements, electrical loads, instrumentation, control philosophy, protection systems, interlocks, and shutdown requirements.
  • Review rotating equipment vibration, balancing, alignment, critical speed, torsional analysis, and rotor dynamic requirements, where applicable.
  • Review vendor proposals and ensure compliance with API, ASME, ISO, IEC, NFPA, NEMA, and project/client standards, as applicable.
  • Prepare and review Material Requisitions, Technical Purchase Specifications, Inspection & Test Plans, Quality Requirements, and inspection procedures.
  • Participate in vendor clarification meetings, technical meetings, kick-off meetings, design reviews, and factory acceptance tests (FAT) as required.
  • Coordinate with Procurement and vendors to ensure timely resolution of technical queries and delivery of engineering documents.
  • Review and resolve technical deviations, concessions, non-conformances, and vendor queries related to rotating equipment.
  • Participate in HAZOP, HAZID, SIL, design reviews, model reviews, constructability reviews, and interdisciplinary reviews, as applicable.
  • Ensure proper engineering workflow, interdisciplinary interfaces, quality checks, document control, and approval of mechanical rotating equipment deliverables.
  • Monitor engineering progress and ensure timely completion of deliverables in accordance with project schedule and man-hour budgets.
  • Support Project Management in identifying engineering changes, deviations, additional requirements, and potential contract scope changes.
  • Provide technical support during equipment inspection, FAT, installation, commissioning, start-up, performance testing, troubleshooting, and site activities, as required.
  • Review equipment-related operating and maintenance requirements and provide technical inputs for commissioning and maintenance documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to Mechanical Engineers and Designers and support development of the Mechanical/Rotary Engineering team.
Additional Skills & Competencies
  1. Strong knowledge of rotating equipment design, selection, application, operation, and maintenance requirements.
  2. Good working knowledge of API 610, API 611, API 612, API 613, API 614, API 615, API 616, API 617, API 618, API 619, API 671, API 682, and other applicable API standards.
  3. Good knowledge of ASME, ISO, IEC, NFPA, NEMA, and relevant international standards.
  4. Strong understanding of centrifugal/reciprocating pumps, compressors, turbines, gearboxes, fans, blowers, agitators, and associated auxiliary systems.
  5. Good knowledge of pump hydraulics, NPSH, compressor performance, surge control, equipment curves, driver selection, and operating cases.
  6. Understanding of rotor dynamics, critical speed, torsional analysis, vibration, balancing, alignment, lubrication, bearings, and mechanical seals.
  7. Experience in reviewing vendor packages and complex rotating equipment technical documentation.
  8. Strong experience in Technical Bid Evaluation, Vendor Document Review, Inspection & Testing, and vendor coordination.
  9. Good understanding of equipment layout, maintenance philosophy, lifting requirements, accessibility, equipment handling, and installation requirements.
  10. Ability to identify and resolve technical and interdisciplinary engineering issues independently.
  11. Strong analytical and problem-solving capability with attention to equipment reliability, safety, operability, maintainability, and lifecycle cost.
  12. Good communication and coordination skills with Clients, PMC, Vendors, Procurement, Contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  13. Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary EPC project environment and manage multiple priorities.
  14. Strong commitment to quality, schedule, cost control, HSE, and engineering excellence.
  15. Experience in brownfield/revamp projects, large-scale EPC projects, or operating plant support will be an added advantage.
  16. Exposure to commissioning, start-up, troubleshooting, reliability improvement, and failure investigation of rotating equipment will be an added advantage.
