Job summary

Gatan Inc. is seeking a senior mechanical design engineer for Electron Microscopy Technologies (EMT) products in Bengaluru, India. The role involves developing complex mechanical designs, performing analyses, and releasing production drawings.

You will participate in NPI projects, VAVE, and cross-functional reviews, ensuring manufacturability and robust performance. The ideal candidate has 6+ years in instrument/mechanical design, experience with vacuum/mechanisms, and strong CAD skills

Qualifications

• Six+ years of experience in mechanical design for instrument or semiconductor equipment, vacuum, or mechanisms.
• Strong knowledge of ANSI/ASME Y14.5M drawing standards and tolerancing (GD&T).
• Experience with advanced 3D CAD systems (Inventor, SolidWorks; Inventor preferred).
• Experience with sheet metal parts design and fabrication processes.
• Proven ability in system-level design/integration, prototyping, and design for manufacturability/serviceability.

Responsibilities

• Develop complex mechanical designs for EMT products.
• Apply mechanical engineering analyses to solve problems.
• Attend design reviews and online meetings in PST; participate in NPI and VAVE projects.
• Create 3D models and release 2D/assembly drawings for production.
• Design tooling, fixtures, and thermo-mechanical components including heat transfer and cooling loops.
• Interface with vendors and manufacturing to ensure manufacturability and performance.
• Prototype development and testing; conduct design reviews at multiple levels.

Gatan Inc. is the world's leading manufacturer of instrumentation and software used to enhance and extend the operation and performance of electron microscopes. Gatan products, which are fully compatible with nearly all electron microscope models and include the EDAX portfolio, cover the entire range of the research process—from specimen preparation and manipulation to imaging and analysis.

Job Role

• Work on complex mechanical designs for the Electron Microscopy Technologies (EMT) products.
• Utilize Mechanical Engineering analytical skills to solve problems.
• Attend online meetings, design reviews, and other online activities on the Pacific Coast (PST) time zone.
• Participate in New Product Introduction (NPI) projects.
• Participate in VAVE (Value Analysis Value Engineering).
• Break down difficult technical concepts and communicate with team members.
• Conduct design reviews at peer, program and upper management levels as needed.
• Create 3D solid models from conceptual stage to release of 2D and assembly drawings into production.
• Design sheet metal parts.
• Assemble and test prototypes and pre-production units.
• Interface with vendors and manufacturing personnel to ensure manufacturability and design performance.
• Design tooling and fixtures.
• Design understanding of heat transfer and thermal cooling methods including water circuit and TEC design.
• System level understanding of electro-mechanical design.

Minimum Requirements

• A minimum of six years’ experience in related field.
• Experience in instrument or semiconductor equipment mechanical design, vacuum, mechanism.
• Knowledge in FEA; experience in ANSYS Workbench preferred.
• Experience in designing sheet metal parts and understanding the sheet metal fabrication process requirements.
• Experience in system level design and integration, and prototyping.
• Knowledge of advanced engineering materials, ANSI/ASME Y14.5M drawing standards, (GD) tolerancing, surface finishes.
• Design for serviceability and manufacturability.
• Experience with an advanced 3D CAD system (Inventor, SolidWorks, etc.). Experience with Autodesk Inventor is a plus.
• Demonstrates a strong work ethic, collaborates effectively as a team player, and consistently shows initiative, ownership, and follow-through.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Solid engineering methodology and process-oriented design.
• Prototype development and testing.

Desirable Skills And Experience

• Experience with thermal, X-Ray shielding, and mechatronics.
• Web-based PLM experience: Agile or similar.
• ANSYS Workbench FEA, Agile PLM, experience with HALT/HASS, high voltage design, electron or ion beam instruments, magnetic shielding, x-ray radiation shielding, coatings, and paint.
