Job summary

Tolani Maritime Institute is seeking an experienced Engine Department Manager to lead and supervise the engine department on ships, fostering safety, professionalism and teamwork.

The role involves planning, resource allocation, training, and ensuring safe operation of propulsion, boilers and electrical systems, along with implementing maintenance programs and compliance with international safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead, manage and supervise the engine department ensuring safety, professionalism and teamwork.
• Plan, organize and delegate duties to the engineering crew for optimal resource use.
• Conduct performance evaluations and provide training and mentorship to junior engineers and ratings.
• Oversee operation, monitoring and performance of main propulsion, auxiliary engines, boilers and power generation systems.
• Ensure machinery operates within design parameters and is efficient.
• Develop and manage the planned maintenance system (PMS) for all engine room gear.
• Oversee inspection, maintenance and repair of shipboard machinery to ensure seaworthiness.
• Troubleshoot technical issues and implement timely solutions.
• Manage inventory of spare parts, consumables and stores with proper stock levels.
• Champion and enforce Safety Management System (SMS) and safety procedures within the engine department.
• Ensure compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, ISM and ISPS codes related to the engine department.
• Oversee proper functioning and maintenance of safety and firefighting equipment in the engine room.
• Participate in and lead emergency response procedures per ship contingency plans.

Job description

Engine Department Management:

• Lead, manage, and supervise all personnel within the engine department, fostering a culture of safety, professionalism, and teamwork.
• Plan, organize, and delegate duties to the engineering crew, ensuring optimal utilization of resources.
• Conduct performance evaluations and provide training and mentorship to junior engineers and ratings.

Machinery and System Operations:

• Oversee the operation, monitoring, and performance of the main propulsion engine, auxiliary engines, boilers, power generation systems, cargo machinery, and all other mechanical and electrical equipment onboard.
• Ensure that all machinery is operated within design parameters and in an efficient manner.

Maintenance and Repair:

• Develop, implement, and manage the planned maintenance system (PMS) for all engine room machinery and equipment.
• Oversee and participate in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of all shipboard machinery, ensuring seaworthiness and operational readiness.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose technical issues, implementing effective and timely solutions.
• Manage the inventory of spare parts, consumables, and stores, ensuring adequate stock levels are maintained and accounted for.

Safety and Compliance:

• Champion and enforce the company's Safety Management System (SMS) and all relevant safety procedures within the engine department.
• Ensure full compliance with all national and international maritime regulations, including SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, ISM Code, and ISPS Code, pertaining to the engine department.
• Oversee the proper functioning and maintenance of all safety and firefighting equipment in the engine room.
• Participate in and lead emergency response procedures as per the ship's contingency plans.
