Job summary

ABC Fitness is seeking an Engineering Leadership & Delivery Lead to guide software engineering teams responsible for building and maintaining commerce services. You’ll own end-to-end delivery, from architecture through production support, partnering with product managers to set priorities and ensure reliable, scalable solutions.

In this role you’ll champion engineering excellence, drive production readiness, and mentor engineers.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Typically 8+ years of software engineering experience with direct people management and delivery responsibilities.
• Strong background in Java, Spring Boot, microservices, and enterprise app development.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems, RESTful APIs, and event-driven architectures.
• Experience leading engineering teams for cloud-based applications, ideally on AWS.
• Knowledge of relational databases, messaging systems, API integrations, and containerized apps.
• Proven ability to manage delivery priorities, dependencies, and production responsibilities.
• Familiarity with Agile, CI/CD, automated testing, and DevOps practices.
• Exposure to Generative AI and AI-assisted software engineering practices.

This role requires working from our office 2-3x a week

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Engineering Leadership & Delivery Lead and manage software engineering teams responsible for building and maintaining business-critical Commerce services. Own end-to-end engineering delivery, from technical planning and solution design through development, testing, deployment, and production support. Partner with Product Managers and stakeholders to define priorities, clarify requirements, manage dependencies, and establish realistic delivery commitments. Drive predictable execution while maintaining high standards for software quality, security, scalability, and reliability. Identify delivery risks, technical dependencies, and execution bottlenecks, taking proactive measures to address them. Establish clear ownership, accountability, and engineering standards across the team. Balance feature delivery, technical debt, production stability, and platform modernization. Use engineering metrics such as cycle time, lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and operational reliability to identify improvement opportunities.

Technical Leadership & Engineering Excellence Provide technical leadership and direction to engineering teams, ensuring architecture, design decisions, and engineering practices support scalable, secure, and reliable solutions. Partner with Principal Developers and Architects to evaluate architectural trade-offs and establish technical direction aligned with product and business priorities. Establish accountability for engineering quality, including clean code, automated testing, security, system reliability, and maintainability. Coach and develop engineers in technical problem-solving, architectural thinking, and engineering best practices, building stronger technical decision‑making capabilities across the team. Guide technical risk management, complex issue resolution, and root cause analysis, engaging directly when necessary while empowering engineers to own solutions. Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to shape technical roadmaps, manage technical debt, and balance delivery priorities with long‑term platform health.

People Leadership & Team Development Build, mentor, and develop high‑performing engineering teams with a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Conduct regular one‑on‑one meetings, provide actionable feedback, and support individual career development. Own performance management, goal setting, coaching and development planning. Identify and develop future technical leads and engineering leaders through mentoring and delegation. Lead hiring, technical interviews, onboarding, and workforce planning to build strong engineering capabilities. Foster psychological safety, constructive technical discussions, and an inclusive team environment. Set clear performance expectations, provide regular feedback and coaching, and address performance gaps promptly and constructively to build a high‑performing engineering team. Promote knowledge sharing, cross‑team collaboration, and reduced dependency on individual contributors.

AI Adoption & Engineering Innovation Champion the responsible adoption of AI‑assisted engineering practices across development, testing, documentation, and operational workflows. Demonstrate a practical understanding of Generative AI, LLMs, AI coding assistants, and agentic engineering workflows. Identify opportunities to leverage AI to reduce repetitive engineering work, accelerate delivery, and improve software quality. Encourage teams to experiment with AI tools while maintaining appropriate engineering review, security, privacy, and quality controls. Collaborate with technical leaders to evaluate AI integrations, orchestration patterns, and automation opportunities. Establish measurable outcomes for AI adoption, including improvements in engineering productivity, quality, and delivery efficiency. Build team capabilities through technical learning sessions, experimentation, and practical AI‑enabled engineering initiatives.

Operational Excellence & Production Ownership Ensure services meet established reliability, availability, performance, and security expectations. Drive production readiness, observability, monitoring, alerting, and incident response practices. Lead incident reviews and root cause analysis, ensuring preventive actions are implemented and tracked. Improve operational metrics such as Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR), incident frequency, and service availability. Establish effective CI/CD practices, automated quality gates, and reliable deployment processes. Promote a culture of continuous improvement through retrospectives, technical reviews, and engineering metrics.

Stakeholder Management & Strategic Execution Collaborate with Product, Architecture, Platform, QA, Security, and business stakeholders to align engineering execution with organizational priorities. Communicate delivery progress, technical risks, dependencies, and trade‑offs clearly to senior leadership. Contribute to engineering strategy, technical roadmap planning, and long‑term platform evolution. Support cross‑team initiatives and influence decisions beyond the immediate team. Demonstrate sound judgment in balancing business priorities, engineering investment, team capacity, and operational risk.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Typically 8+ years of software engineering experience, including demonstrated experience directly managing software engineers and engineering delivery. Strong software development background with hands‑on experience in Java, Spring Boot, microservices, and enterprise application development. Solid understanding of system design, distributed systems, RESTful APIs, and event‑driven architectures, with the ability to engage confidently in technical discussions. Experience leading engineering teams responsible for building and operating cloud‑based applications, ideally on AWS or comparable platforms. Working knowledge of relational databases, messaging systems, API integrations, and containerized applications. Proven experience managing engineering delivery, technical priorities, dependencies, and production responsibilities. Experience hiring, coaching, developing, and managing the performance of software engineers while building high‑performing teams. Strong understanding of Agile development practices, CI/CD, automated testing, and DevOps principles. Experience establishing engineering standards and improving delivery predictability, software quality, reliability, and operational performance. Working knowledge of Generative AI and AI‑assisted software engineering practices, including opportunities to improve developer productivity and engineering workflows. Ability to partner effectively with Architects, Principal Engineers, and Technical Leads to evaluate architectural trade‑offs, manage technical risks, and guide sound engineering decisions. Ability to communicate technical priorities and trade‑offs clearly, build cross‑functional alignment, and resolve competing priorities. Demonstrated ownership of engineering outcomes, balancing people development, technical quality, and business priorities.

Experience leading engineering teams supporting Billing, Payments, Collections, or Commerce platforms. Previous experience as a Technical Lead, Staff Engineer, or in an architecture‑focused role, bringing additional depth in technical design and engineering decision‑making. Experience leading large‑scale modernization, platform migration, or technical transformation initiatives. Experience managing geographically distributed engineering teams or multiple engineering workstreams. Exposure to AI‑enabled applications, AI‑assisted software development, or emerging agentic AI technologies.
