Job summary

The Hartford India seeks a skilled Linux Engineer to support Linux platforms across private and public clouds. You will drive automation, patching, and security hardening while mentoring junior engineers and ensuring high availability in a large-scale environment.

Responsibilities include incident management, performance tuning, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to maintain robust Linux infrastructure services.

Qualifications

  • Strong Linux administration experience on RHEL/Ubuntu/Amazon Linux or equivalent.
  • Scripting experience with Bash and Python.
  • Configuration management and automation with Ansible, Terraform, Satellite or equivalent tools.
  • Solid understanding of system services (systemd, cron, filesystems, LVM, package management, kernel parameters).
  • Experience with virtualization/cloud platforms (VMware, AWS, GCP) and networking basics.

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain Linux OS across private and public cloud environments.
  • Manage lifecycle activities: provisioning, patching, upgrades, decommissioning.
  • Monitor health, performance, availability, and capacity with automation and observability.
  • Troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis for Linux incidents.
  • Implement Linux security hardening and CIS benchmarking.
  • Manage access, authentication, SSH, LDAP, and AD integration.

Job description

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated engineer to serve in our Compute Chapter supporting Linux Platforms. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with deep expertise in Linux administration, OS hardening, patching, performance tuning, automation, and enterprise platform operations across a large scale environment. The ideal candidate will guide junior engineers and drive operational excellence across Linux infrastructure services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, configure, and maintain Linux operating systems across private and public cloud environments
  • Manage system lifecycle activities including provisioning, patching, upgrades, technology currency, and decommissioning
  • Monitor Linux platform health, performance, availability, and capacity through automation and enhanced observability capabilities
  • Perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis for Linux platform incidents and recurring problems
  • Implement Linux security hardening and compliance standards including CIS benchmark alignment where applicable
  • Manage user access, permissions, authentication, SSH, sudo, LDAP, and Active Directory integration
Automation & Orchestration
  • Build and maintain automation scripts and frameworks using Bash, Python, Ansible, Terraform, or equivalent tools
  • Automate recurring Linux operational tasks including provisioning, patching, monitoring, reporting, and remediation
  • Integrate Linux environments with enterprise automation platforms, observability toolsets, and CI/CD pipelines
24x7 Operations & Incident Management
  • Support 24x7 Linux operations including software patching, technology currency, and vulnerability management
  • Oversee incident response, root cause analysis, problem management, and service restoration for Linux infrastructure services
  • Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Windows, storage, backup, network, security, and application teams
  • Operational Excellence
  • Ensure high availability, scalability, security, and compliance of Linux server environments
  • Develop reporting and service health metrics that improve operational visibility and accountability
Qualifications
  • Strong Linux administration experience with RHEL, Ubuntu, Amazon Linux, or equivalent Operating Systems
  • Shell scripting experience with Bash; Python
  • Configuration management and automation experience with Ansible, Terraform, Satellite, or equivalent tools
  • Strong understanding of system services and internals including systemd, cron, filesystems, LVM, package management, and kernel parameters
  • Linux patching, vulnerability remediation, hardening, and technology currency experience
  • Networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, DNS, NTP, load balancing, and firewalls
  • Logging and monitoring tools such as Splunk and Dynatrace
  • Experience with virtualization and/or cloud platforms including VMware, Nutanix, AWS, or GCP
