The role focuses on monitoring, incident resolution, server health, patching, access and authentication support, virtualization interfaces, and service restoration within agreed SLAs. The engineer works with cross-functional infrastructure teams and escalates complex or recurring issues to L3, engineering, or vendor support with clear technical evidence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Linux Operations and Administration
- Administer and support enterprise Linux servers, primarily RHEL or equivalent distributions, across physical and virtual environments.
- Perform user, group, file-system, package, process, service, SSH, sudo, cron, and systemd administration.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk, inode, file-system, process, and network utilization; take corrective action before service impact.
- Execute approved operational requests and maintain accurate configuration and inventory records.
- Incident, Problem and Alert Management
- Monitor operational alerts and queues, validate events, diagnose faults, and restore service within agreed response and resolution targets.
- Perform structured troubleshooting using system logs, journal logs, application logs, OS utilities, and monitoring data.
- Conduct initial root-cause analysis for recurring incidents and contribute evidence, timelines, and remediation actions.
- Escalate major or unresolved issues to L3, engineering, security, network, storage, database, or vendor teams and track through closure.
- Patching, Maintenance and Change Support
- Perform pre-checks, patch deployment support, post-validation, reboot coordination, and rollback readiness for Linux servers.
- Support planned power, maintenance, migration, deployment, and disaster recovery activities.
- Execute changes through approved ITIL processes, document implementation results, and communicate risks or failures promptly.
- Tools, Compute and Virtualization Support
- Support Linux-hosted monitoring or infrastructure tools, including service availability, agents, integrations, and log collection.
- Provide L2 support for KVM and remote-management environments, including VM health, console access, and basic configuration troubleshooting.
- Assist with device discovery, onboarding, alert validation, and performance or configuration monitoring activities where applicable.
- Troubleshoot dependencies involving DNS, DHCP, NTP, Active Directory or LDAP authentication, storage mounts, network connectivity, and certificates.
- Operational Governance and Communication
- Own assigned incidents, service requests, alerts, and change tasks from acceptance through closure with complete work notes.
- Provide timely status, restoration, and resolution communication to stakeholders and during major incidents.
- Maintain SOPs, knowledge articles, troubleshooting guides, shift handovers, and recurring-issue records.
- Participate in 24x7 rotational shifts, on-call support, and operational handoffs as required by the service.
Skill Requirement:
- Red Hat certification such as RHCSA or RHCE, or equivalent Linux certification.
- Hands-on exposure to Ansible, Python, or shell-based automation.
- Experience with Azure-hosted Linux workloads and cloud operations.
- Working knowledge of ServiceNow, enterprise monitoring platforms, vulnerability remediation, and security hardening.
- Exposure to Kubernetes or container platforms is beneficial but not mandatory.
Additional Requirement:
- Expected L2 Proficiency
- Linux administration: RHEL/CentOS/Oracle Linux/SUSE or equivalent; command-line troubleshooting and system operations
- System service:s systemd, boot process, package management, cron, SSH, sudo, permissions, processes and log management
- Storage: LVM, file systems, mount points, NFS, capacity and inode troubleshooting
- Networking: TCP/IP fundamentals, DNS, DHCP, routing basics, ports, firewall concepts and connectivity diagnostics
- Monitoring and logs: Alert validation, performance monitoring, syslog/journald and common Linux diagnostic tools
- Operations processes: Incident, request, problem and change management; SLA-driven production support
- Virtualization: Working knowledge of KVM/VMware and remote console or server-management interfaces
- Scripting: Basic shell scripting; ability to read or modify scripts for repeatable operational tasks
- Enterprise integration: Basic knowledge of Active Directory/LDAP authentication, certificates and access management
