The Senior Systems Engineer - Storage provides technical expertise across enterprise storage solution design, engineering, delivery, administration, and support. The role performs complex technical project assignments with minimal supervision and identifies, investigates, evaluates, automates, and develops proficiency in technologies and technical disciplines of significance to HCA Healthcare.
The role provides technical review, engineering, administration, analysis, trending, and reporting across supported storage configurations in a multi-platform environment. Responsibilities include storage hardware and software administration, technical documentation, project execution, issue resolution, technical presentations, operating system installation and customization where applicable, recovery from component failures, and mentoring and training junior Storage Engineers.
The engineer is expected to bring cross-platform knowledge and Subject Matter Expert depth in at least one key storage or data protection technology, with exposure to others including Dell EMC PowerProtect, PowerMAX, Unity, PowerScale, NetApp, Pure, Cybernetics, Commvault, Zerto, Dell EMC Networker, Dell EMC Data Protection Advisor, Dell EMC SRDF, and storage management tools such as Unisphere, SYMCLI, and OnCommand.
US input prompts: Confirm the primary storage platforms, scale of the environment, expected SME area, project ownership, and on-call/support expectations.
Responsibilities:
- Provide technical engineering, administration, analysis, trending, and reporting for supported enterprise storage configurations.
- Administer and maintain storage platforms including Dell EMC, NetApp, and Pure in a multi-platform environment.
- Perform operating system installation and customization where applicable and support recovery from component failures of supported systems.
- Provide technical input for installation and certification of supporting hardware and software in lab environments prior to production deployment.
Technical Delivery & Support
- Perform technical project assignments with minimal supervision and deliver solutions in accordance with project timelines and associated budgets.
- Troubleshoot storage systems, operating systems, utilities, vendor products, hardware configurations, and applicable communication protocols.
- Use diagnostic, benchmarking, statistical, and analytical tools for system monitoring, evaluation, capacity, and performance analysis.
- Maintain technical documentation and provide technical presentations, guidance, mentoring, and training to junior Storage Engineers.
Automation & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Identify, investigate, evaluate, and automate new technologies and technical disciplines relevant to enterprise storage services.
- Create automation scripts using technologies such as PowerShell, Ansible, and REST APIs.
- Maintain frequent interaction with internal technical teams, vendor technical staff, and project managers to ensure effective solution delivery.
- Apply knowledge of technology, network, data, and application architectures when designing and supporting storage solutions.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent education and/or relevant experience may be considered based on role requirements.
- 5+ years of experience deploying technical infrastructure computing solutions across platforms and components.
- Proven track record of project delivery results in enterprise infrastructure or storage environments.
- Experience supporting large-scale production environments and enterprise storage technologies.
Must Have Skills
- In-depth technical understanding of enterprise storage technologies, with strong experience in Dell EMC, NetApp, and/or Pure; experience across all three is highly desirable.
- Subject Matter Expert capability in at least one relevant storage or data protection technology with cross-platform exposure.
- Platform knowledge in Windows Server 2012+ and/or Red Hat 6.0+.
- Solid understanding of operating system concepts and practical implementation in a large-scale production environment.
- Experience creating automation scripts using PowerShell, Ansible, REST APIs, or similar technologies.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, technical documentation, project delivery, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
- Understanding of network fundamentals and performance principles, including TCP/IP protocols.
Nice to Have Skills
- Experience with VMware ESX or similar virtualization technologies.
- Working knowledge of key ITIL processes.
- Experience with application development coding, debugging, testing, and production delivery.
- Understanding of compute performance metrics and tools, including CPU utilization, CPU and disk queuing, I/O response times, and related performance indicators.
- Broader exposure to Dell EMC PowerProtect, PowerMAX, Unity, PowerScale, NetApp, Pure, Cybernetics, Commvault, Zerto, Networker, Data Protection Advisor, SRDF, Unisphere, SYMCLI, or OnCommand.
