Job summary

Chargebee is seeking a Lead Software Engineer - Backend to redefine CRM-billing integrations at a SaaS scale. You will lead architecture, design, and hands-on delivery of AI-native connectors with Salesforce and HubSpot, mentoring engineers and shaping scalable services.

You will own end-to-end integration quality, drive performance, security, and observability, and collaborate with product managers in a fast-paced, globally distributed team.

Chargebee is looking for a Lead Software Engineer - Backend to rethink the integrations between CRM and billing in an AI-native way. This role will shape how customers automate sales processes and interact with Chargebee using AI. This team builds best-in-class capabilities that integrate Chargebee with enterprise CRM platforms such as Salesforce and HubSpot, simplifying sales workflows.

Job Summary:

This role requires a blend of strong technical expertise, exceptional system design skills, an AI-Native mindset, and a passion for leading and mentoring engineers. As a Lead Software Engineer - Backend, you will lead the development and delivery of key product features, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful execution of innovative, customer-focused solutions. Your role will involve both architectural and hands-on technical contributions to ensure the team delivers scalable, high-quality products that meet business objectives. There will be a clear focus on building AI Native products, so experience in building them is ideal, but otherwise the ability to learn on the job and upskill quickly is mandatory.

The key responsibilities include:

• Lead the end-to-end technical design and architecture of of CRM integrations, with a strong focus on scale and data accuracy.
• Develop modular, maintainable, and reliable code that adheres to industry-leading design patterns and security standards.
• Participate actively in cross-functional forums, making well-reasoned, opinionated decisions on integration architecture to ensure reliability, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
• Collaborate closely with Product Managers to translate business requirements into robust, scalable CRM connectors and integration workflows.
• Write hands-on, production-quality code to build frameworks and middleware that underpin seamless integrations.
• Champion AI adoption in the team and drive the development of AI-native functionalities.
• Author and maintain technical documentation, API specifications, and implementation guides that serve as clear references for engineering and solution consulting teams.
• Own integration quality end-to-end - through rigorous code reviews, automated testing, data validation, and API automation, while proactively identifying and resolving data sync or API consumption issues.
• Troubleshoot and resolve customer-reported integration issues with urgency, transparency, and clear communication.
• Mentor and coach engineers on best practices for building scalable, resilient integrations, fostering a culture of technical excellence.
• Champion Agile practices within the team, driving iterative delivery and continuous improvement.

What You Bring:

• 7+ years of proven experience designing and building enterprise-scale SaaS platforms, with solid exposure to distributed backend systems.
• Strong hands-on proficiency in Java, RESTful APIs, and OLTP databases.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems architecture, microservices, and industry best practices for operating at large scale.
• Passionate about AI-powered automation and curious about how agentic approaches can transform enterprise workflows.
• Experience building, supporting, and optimizing production systems, with a proven track record of identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks.
• Proficiency in enterprise-scale monitoring and observability using modern tooling.
• Ability to balance pragmatism with vision, delivering incremental value today while laying the foundation for future scale.
• Demonstrated success in fostering a culture of innovation, ownership, accountability, and customer focus.
