Northern Trust is seeking a Lead, Enterprise Architect to architect and implement enterprise-scale solutions across cloud, SaaS, and AI platforms. The role combines architecture leadership with hands-on coding, automation, and AI agent development to drive practical, scalable outcomes.
You will design patterns, contribute code for APIs and microservices, develop PoCs, and guide teams toward CI/CD, IaC, and modern engineering practices in a global banking context.
As a global leader in innovative wealth management, asset servicing, asset management and banking services, Northern Trust (Nasdaq: NTRS) is proud to guide the world's most successful individuals, families, corporations and institutions.
Since 1889, we have aligned our efforts with our three guiding Principles That Endure: Service, Expertise, and Integrity. Together, they reflect the three cornerstones of business conduct which we strive to instill in our employees, whom we call partners, and to provide to our clients and the communities we serve worldwide.
With more than 135 years of financial experience and over 24,000 partners, we serve the world's most sophisticated clients using leading technology and exceptional service.
We are seeking a technically hands-on Enterprise Architect who combines strong architecture expertise with practical engineering capability. This individual will operate as a player-coach, contributing directly to solution design and implementation - writing code, building automation, and enhancing AI-driven solutions.
This role is ideal for an architect who does not want to stay purely at the conceptual level, but instead actively participates in building, prototyping, and evolving enterprise solutions alongside engineering teams.
Design and evolve enterprise architecture patterns across cloud, SaaS, and AI-enabled platforms
Directly contribute to codebases where appropriate (e.g., APIs, automation, integrations, AI agents)
Develop proofs-of-concept and reference implementations to validate architectural decisions
Develop solution designs for enterprise architecture solutions and consult with other teams as needed
Design, build, and enhance AI agents and copilots using modern frameworks (e.g., Azure OpenAI, Copilot Studio, LangChain, Semantic Kernel)
Contribute to prompt engineering, orchestration logic, and integration patterns
Automate enterprise governance and operational processes using tools such as Power Automate, Azure Functions, Logic Apps, or similar
Write and review code for APIs, microservices, and integration layers
Build reusable services and automation pipelines that accelerate delivery teams
Assist in debugging, performance tuning, and resolving complex technical issues
Define and enforce architecture standards while ensuring they are practical and implementable
Partner with engineering teams to ensure alignment between architecture and delivery
Support modern engineering practices (CI/CD, IaC, testing strategies) into enterprise workflows
Act as a bridge between architecture and engineering teams
Provide hands-on technical guidance and mentorship to developers and solution architects
Engage with stakeholders to align technical solutions with business needs
Proficiency in Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript
Experience building APIs, services, and automation workflows
Familiarity with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and modern DevOps practices
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
Experience building and deploying cloud-native applications (containers, serverless, microservices)
Practical experience building or integrating AI/ML or LLM-based solutions
Understanding of agent-based architectures, prompt orchestration, and AI governance
Ability to evaluate and apply emerging technologies in real-world enterprise contexts
Design, build, and optimize agentic AI systems using modern agent frameworks (e.g., LangGraph, AutoGen, Haystack Agents, ReAct-style agents).
Implement multi-agent collaboration patterns, task orchestration, memory architectures, tool integrations, and reasoning-enhancing strategies.
Develop secure, robust, and scalable tool‑calling and function‑execution flows for agents operating in dynamic environments.
Experience with workflow automation tools (Power Automate, Logic Apps, etc.)
Strong understanding of system integration patterns (REST, messaging, event-driven architecture)
Knowledge of architecture frameworks (TOGAF, Zachman) with a pragmatic, execution-focused mindset
Experience defining architecture patterns, standards, and reusable design components
Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Knowledge of enterprise architecture principles, patterns, and best practices, with familiarity in cloud computing and SaaS models. Excellent consultative and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with business, partner, and IT stakeholders. Certifications such as Azure Solutions Arch
