Job summary

Northern Trust is seeking an Enterprise Architect who actively builds and evolves enterprise solutions. The role combines architecture leadership with hands-on development—writing code, automating processes, and advancing AI-driven capabilities alongside engineering teams.

The candidate will design patterns across cloud, SaaS, and AI-enabled platforms, contribute to APIs and integration work, and ensure architecture aligns with governance and modern DevOps practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Knowledge of enterprise architecture principles, patterns, and best practices, with familiarity in cloud computing and SaaS models.
• Certifications such as Azure Solutions Architect, AWS Architect, or TOGAF a plus.
• Experience in financial services or other highly regulated environments.
• Familiarity with governance, compliance, and risk frameworks (e.g., NIST, FFIEC, GDPR)

Responsibilities

• Design and evolve enterprise architecture patterns across cloud, SaaS, and AI-enabled platforms
• Directly contribute to codebases where appropriate (e.g., APIs, automation, integrations, AI agents)
• Develop proofs-of-concept and reference implementations to validate architectural decisions
• Develop solution designs for enterprise architecture solutions and consult with other teams as needed
• Design, build, and enhance AI agents and copilots using modern frameworks (e.g., Azure OpenAI, Copilot Studio, LangChain, Semantic Kernel)
• Contribute to prompt engineering, orchestration logic, and integration patterns
• Automate enterprise governance and operational processes using tools such as Power Automate, Azure Functions, Logic Apps, or similar
• Write and review code for APIs, microservices, and integration layers
• Build reusable services and automation pipelines that accelerate delivery teams
• Assist in debugging, performance tuning, and resolving complex technical issues
• Define and enforce architecture standards while ensuring they are practical and implementable
• Partner with engineering teams to ensure alignment between architecture and delivery
• Support modern engineering practices (CI/CD, IaC, testing strategies) into enterprise workflows
• Act as a bridge between architecture and engineering teams
• Provide hands-on technical guidance and mentorship to developers and solution architects
