Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership within a matrix management function whereby you will have dotted (indirect) line reporting of the DevOps engineers. In practice this means that you will have responsibility and authority for the technical remit of the DevOps engineers but not have line management responsibilities freeing you up to focus on adding value within the technical domain as an individual contributor.
  • Be hands-on using a wide range of Microsoft Azure technologies such as Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure Key Vault, Azure Service Bus etc. In addition, project management in an agile scrum format, source control (git), build and deployment are handled within Azure DevOps. Finally our platform is built as infrastructure as code using Terraform.
  • Evaluate the technical landscape taking ownership and accountability of the cloud infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines ensuring standards are set and maintained in line with the Head of Architecture and Regional Architects.
  • Responsibility for ensuring that cost to serve is accounted for with all designs proposed and retroactively evaluating existing infrastructure.
  • Hands on with developing new processes where they do not exist and continuously improving current processes.
  • Ensure Security, High Availability, Disaster Recovery, and all current best practices.
  • Ensure Alerting and Monitoring of the current Infrastructure.
  • Propose solutions for automation for build, test and deploy of Infra components and ensure that they are followed.
  • Actively participate in architectural governance forums such as centre of excellence (CoE) and technical guilds. Furthermore, ensure that decisions made are followed through within the teams.
  • Work collaboratively with the Group Director of Architecture, Head of Architecture, and fellow architects to influence and steer technical leads as well as their teams towards pragmatic decisions as well as communicate team progress.
  • Undertake R&D, prototype new approaches, technologies, techniques and ensure knowledge sharing to streams.
Key Responsibilities
  • Driving outcomes: focuses on results and desired outcomes and how best to achieve them.
  • Able to execute plans through to action. Persistent to complete tasks and a strong commitment to take action that moves things along to ensure delivery of objectives.
  • Ownership & accountability: takes personal accountability and ownership for their work. This includes personal follow through, making and defending difficult decisions and trade-offs, removing blockers, driving collective progress.
  • Continuous Improvement: advances by ongoing, incremental improvement through continuous learning, pair-programming, questioning the status quo and trying out creative and novel ideas. Shows curiosity and has a keen interest to drive learning for themselves and others.
  • Pragmatic in approach, understanding that software and its architecture are fundamentally about trade-offs. What works today may not work tomorrow, evolutionary architecture is the goal.
  • Ability to work in a team of very experienced individuals, understands that egos are not productive, ability to listen and provide objective feedback.
  • A lot more focus should be on leading by example and mentoring across all the teams to ensure that the team are successful within their remit.
