Job summary

Atlas Copco in Pune, India seeks a Lead Design Engineer to head design activities, with a focus on NPD, manufacturability, and reliability. You will oversee a small team, drive feasibility studies, develop design concepts, and ensure thorough technical documentation and BOMs. Collaboration across teams and strong problem-solving are essential.

You’ll apply Catia, ERP/PLM tools, HazOp/FMEA risk assessment, read P&ID/GA layouts, and mentor junior engineers while delivering First Time Right quality.

Qualifications

• 8-11 years of experience in mechanical design and engineering.
• University degree in Engineering/Technology (Mechanical).
• Strong knowledge of DFMA and manufacturability.
• Experience with CATIA and ERP/PLM systems.
• Familiarity with HazOp and FMEA risk assessment.
• Ability to read P&ID, GA, layouts; read and interpret drawings.
• Regulatory awareness and knowledge of engineering standards.

Responsibilities

Job description

As a Lead Design Engineer, you are responsible for leading as a SPOC for a product company or managing a small team of 3-4 engineers, setting high standards in innovation and project execution while serving as a role model. You lead from the front, simultaneously handling multiple complex assignments, demonstrating technical expertise, and delivering First Time Right (FTR) quality with consistency. You oversee feasibility studies, develop and evaluate diverse design concepts, and ensure thorough, professional proposals and deliverables that meet project milestones and specifications. Your impact is measured not only by technical results but also by your ability to drive innovation, and reliably deliver solutions that elevate quality and reliability for the organization.

Customer & Project Focus

• Understand New Product Development (NPD) project scope and requirements.
• Select, calculate, and validate machine components and materials.
• Work independently, lead projects and deliver expected output effectively.
• Apply innovative engineering methods and research emerging technologies.
• Conduct feasibility studies, develop concepts, and present proposals for approval.
• Deliver complete technical documentation, including drawings, BOMs, and instructions.
• Lead and participate in 3D and 2D design reviews.
• Identify and resolve technical issues efficiently.
• Collaborate across teams and contribute to discussions on quality and manufacturability.
• Provide regular project updates in team meetings.

• Advise team leaders on specialized technical training and development needs.
• Share lessons learned and best practices across projects and departments.
• Act as a key resource for resolving complex technical queries in line with standards and business goals.

Operational Excellence

• Allocate work to the team members based on the criticality/ complexity of the task.
• Lead project estimation, reporting, and progress monitoring.
• Ensure adherence to SOPs, compliance requirements, and documentation standards.
• Review designs for safety, quality, and compliance with company, international, and customer standards.
• Maintain accurate records of drawings, markups, and technical communications.

Product Focus

• Promote reuse of components, modular designs, platforms, and subassemblies.
• Prepare ISO documentation, incorporate customer feedback, and drive continuous improvement.
• Maintain knowledge databases covering products, processes, tools, and expertise.
• Execute industrial product design including frames, brackets, piping, weldments, assemblies, and ERP-based BOM release.

Technology & Innovation Focus

• Identify and implement innovative, cost-efficient solutions to improve product performance, reliability, sustainability, and compliance with global regulations.
• Lead efficiency and automation initiatives to strengthen best-in-class engineering practices and continuous improvement.

Experience

• University degree in Engineering/Technology (Mechanical) with 8-11years of experience.

Knowledge

• Good command of general office software (Word, Excel, MS Project/MPP etc.).
• Understanding of Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA)
• Knowledge and understanding of design processes (Project and Development).
• Mechanical background with electrical awareness adds appreciation.
• Strong understanding and application of Engineering analysis and calculation.
• Awareness of legislative regulations and industry standards (experience highly desirable).
• Should understand the engineering activities (NPD and continuous improvement projects) within an organization.
• Experience with SAP for BoM and Material Master component research is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with risk assessment methodologies such as HazOp and FMEA
• Knowledge of product reliability principles and testing.
• Able to read & understand P&ID, GA, Layouts etc.
• Working knowledge of CATIA, MS Office.
• Good knowledge and experience of any PLM/ ERP system.
• Knowledge of Semiconductor Dry pumps & Abatement Solutions is an added advantage
