Responsibilities

Job description

We are looking for an experienced Senior Java Azure Cloud Engineer to design, develop, test, deploy, and support scalable cloud-based applications. The role requires strong hands-on expertise in Java 17/21, Spring Boot 3.x, microservices, REST APIs, Azure Cloud, Azure DevOps, SQL, and automated testing.

The selected professional will work across the complete application lifecycle, including technical design, backend development, code quality, cloud deployment, production monitoring, performance improvement, and incident resolution. The role also involves collaboration with business, engineering, testing, DevOps, and support teams in an Agile environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Application Design and Development

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend applications using Java 17/21 and Spring Boot 3.x.
• Build secure, reliable, and high-performing microservices and RESTful APIs.
• Apply object-oriented programming concepts, SOLID principles, reusable design patterns, and clean coding standards.
• Participate in technical design discussions and convert functional requirements into appropriate technical solutions.
• Develop maintainable application components with proper exception handling, logging, validation, and documentation.
• Use modern Java capabilities such as Records, Switch Expressions, Streams, Text Blocks, and Pattern Matching where appropriate.

2. Microservices and API Engineering

• Design independently deployable microservices with clearly defined responsibilities.
• Develop REST APIs following API-first design principles.
• Maintain API specifications using OpenAPI/Swagger.
• Implement standardized error handling using Spring Boot capabilities such as @ControllerAdvice and @ExceptionHandler.
• Integrate applications with internal and external services using technologies such as WebClient or Feign Client.
• Support asynchronous and event-driven integrations using Kafka or Azure Service Bus, where required.
• Apply appropriate API security methods, including OAuth2 or mutual TLS, based on application requirements.

3. Azure Cloud Deployment and Management

• Deploy, configure, and support Java applications within the Microsoft Azure environment.
• Work with applicable Azure services such as Azure App Service, Azure Key Vault, Azure SQL, Azure Storage, Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Event Hub, and Azure Service Bus.
• Ensure application configuration and secrets are handled securely.
• Support environment-specific application configurations using Spring Profiles and configuration files.
• Contribute to infrastructure automation using Terraform or ARM templates, where applicable.
• Identify opportunities for Azure resource optimization and efficient cloud usage.

4. CI/CD and Source-Code Management

• Build, maintain, and improve automated deployment pipelines using Azure DevOps.
• Manage source code using Azure Repos and Git.
• Follow effective branching, pull-request, and peer-review practices.
• Integrate code-quality, security, dependency, and license checks into CI/CD pipelines.
• Work with tools such as SonarQube, Fortify, and Nexus IQ, where available.
• Ensure that unit and integration tests are automatically executed as part of the deployment pipeline.
• Support controlled deployments across development, testing, and production environments.

5. Automated Testing and Quality Engineering

• Develop comprehensive unit tests using JUnit 5 and Mockito.
• Create integration tests using Spring Boot Test.
• Support behaviour-driven or API testing using Cucumber, where required.
• Maintain testable code through dependency injection, modular design, and proper separation of concerns.
• Participate in code reviews and ensure adherence to defined coding and testing standards.
• Investigate defects, perform root-cause analysis, and deliver sustainable fixes.
• Contribute to application performance or load testing using tools such as JMeter, where applicable.

6. Database Development and Performance Optimization

• Design and develop database interactions using SQL and Spring Data JPA.
• Write and optimize SQL queries for relational databases, including Azure SQL.
• Review query execution plans and identify table scans, inefficient joins, or indexing issues.
• Address common ORM performance concerns such as the N+1 query problem.
• Apply appropriate indexing, batch-processing, transaction-management, and connection-pooling practices.
• Configure and optimize database connection pools such as HikariCP.
• Use optimistic or pessimistic locking where needed to maintain data consistency.
• Support large-scale data processing through Spring Batch or JDBC batching when appropriate.

7. Monitoring and Production Support

• Monitor application availability, performance, errors, and dependencies using Azure Monitor and Application Insights.
• Review logs, distributed traces, live application metrics, and KQL-based monitoring information.
• Provide advanced production support and troubleshoot complex application or performance issues.
• Perform root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions.
• Support alert configuration for application failures, high resource utilization, memory issues, and increased server errors.
• Identify slow queries, application bottlenecks, and inefficient resource usage.
• Recommend improvements related to application performance, reliability, scalability, and Azure cost utilization.

8. Agile Delivery and Collaboration

• Participate actively in daily stand-ups, sprint planning, refinement, reviews, and retrospectives.
• Collaborate with product owners, architects, developers, testers, DevOps engineers, and support teams.
• Clarify functional requirements and contribute to technical specifications.
• Provide technical guidance and constructive feedback during design and code reviews.
• Maintain clear technical documentation for APIs, application components, deployment processes, and operational support.

Take end-to-end ownership of assigned deliverables and communicate risks or dependencies clearly. Mandatory Technical Skills
