Job summary

Kyndryl Inc. in Pune, India seeks an experienced software engineer to lead COBOL-to-Java modernization, translating legacy business logic into scalable Java microservices. You will analyze COBOL/JCL/CICS/VSAM workloads and refactor them into cloud-ready applications while ensuring performance and data integrity.

You will design, develop, test, and deploy Java apps using Spring and REST, collaborating with architects, analysts, and testers to deliver robust, maintainable modernization solutions.

• 5-10 years of software development experience using Java.
• 2+ years of Mainframe development experience.
• Hands-on experience in COBOL-to-Java transformation or modernization projects.
• Experience analyzing large-scale legacy applications and translating business logic into modern architectures.

Responsibilities

• Analyze existing COBOL, JCL, CICS, VSAM, DB2, and batch applications to understand business processes.
• Convert and refactor legacy COBOL code into modern Java-based applications.
• Translate business logic from mainframe systems into Java microservices and enterprise applications.
• Design, develop, test, and deploy Java applications using modern frameworks and patterns.
• Participate in application modernization and digital transformation initiatives.
• Work with business users and SMEs to validate functionality and ensure continuity.
• Identify opportunities to optimize converted code beyond mere translation.
• Develop integration solutions between modern Java apps and legacy systems when required.
• Create technical documentation, mapping documents, and conversion guidelines.
• Conduct code reviews and ensure coding standards and best practices.

• Troubleshoot and resolve issues during migration and post-migration support.

This role will focus on analyzing, converting, and modernizing mainframe applications from COBOL to Java while ensuring business functionality, performance, and data integrity are maintained.
