About the Role
This role is within the Vesper team at Deltatre, the platform responsible for delivering VOD and live events to users at global scale. The work spans Java services, event-driven processes, RESTful APIs, and the AWS infrastructure that underpins the streaming platform. Deltatre is hiring at two levels — Senior and Mid — and both roles require ownership, careful system design thinking, and commitment to engineering problems that matter at scale. The distinction between the levels lies in depth of experience, degree of independence, and scope of contribution.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, maintain, and optimise Java services running event-driven processes and RESTful APIs on AWS infrastructure.
- Take end-to-end ownership of complex features and system components at Senior level, and ownership of well-scoped features and components with increasing independence at Mid level, from design through to production.
- Own and implement robust, scalable solutions for VOD and live event delivery — Senior engineers own design and delivery, while Mid-level engineers implement with appropriate guidance.
- Take an active role in system and API design discussions, bringing well-reasoned proposals, asking good questions, raising concerns, and sharing perspective.
- Write and maintain automated tests, contribute to defining test approaches across the team, and develop the ability to design meaningful test cases.
- Participate in code review, setting and maintaining engineering standards, and give and receive feedback constructively.
- Identify and address performance bottlenecks, reliability risks, and technical debt proactively, and raise performance and reliability issues within scope clearly.
- Mentor mid-level engineers through review, pairing, and day-to-day technical guidance (Senior level).
- Work closely with QA and product within an agile delivery model (Mid level).
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Both levels: takes ownership, thinks carefully about system design, and is committed to engineering problems that genuinely matter at scale.
- Senior level: substantial Java 11+ with demonstrated production experience on modern versions.
- Senior level: deep relational database experience with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.
- Senior level: proven experience building and consuming RESTful APIs (JAX-RS, Dropwizard, Spring Boot or similar).
- Senior level: experience designing and working on event-driven systems (SQS, Kinesis, SNS, Kafka or similar).
- Senior level: demonstrated familiarity with AWS services including EC2, RDS, S3, SQS, and DynamoDB.
- Senior level: substantial command of software design patterns and the judgement to apply them appropriately.
- Senior level: demonstrated automated testing skills — unit and integration — with the ability to design meaningful test cases.
- Senior level: experience working effectively in an agile, cross-functional delivery team.
- Senior level: owns work from design to production, contributes to architecture discussions with substance, and helps others improve without being asked.
- Mid level: solid Java 11+ with production experience on modern versions.
- Mid level: working relational database experience with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.
- Mid level: experience building and consuming RESTful APIs (JAX-RS, Dropwizard, Spring Boot or similar).
- Mid level: familiarity with event-driven systems concepts and some practical exposure.
- Mid level: awareness of AWS services and cloud-based deployment patterns.
Preferred Skills
- Senior level valued: Scala or experience with functional programming paradigms.
- Senior level valued: experience with NoSQL data stores.
- Senior level valued: infrastructure as code — Terraform or Ansible.
- Senior level valued: Docker and containerised workloads.
- Senior level valued: experience delivering complex features with zero downtime in production.
- Senior level valued: background in streaming, media, or broadcast technology.
- Mid level valued: any exposure to Scala or functional programming paradigms.
- Mid level valued: familiarity with NoSQL data stores.
- Mid level valued: awareness of infrastructure-as-code concepts.
- Mid level valued: experience with Docker or containerised workloads.
- Mid level valued: interest in or background in streaming, media, or broadcast technology.
The Application Process
The process has four stages. If any format would be difficult, candidates are encouraged to tell Deltatre, which adjusts regularly and can usually accommodate; accessibility and accommodation questions are welcome at any stage, including before applying. Candidates unsure which level is right for them are invited to apply and indicate where they think they sit.
- Introductory conversation to get to know each other and for candidates to ask questions about Deltatre.
- Take-home assessment: a coding challenge to get a sense of the work; this step is the entry point and mandatory to access further steps.
- 1-hour technical round: uses the assessment as a starting point for discussion with senior team members, including code review and detailed technical discussion.
- 1-hour competency-based interview: situational questions around how candidates deal with real-life scenarios at work.
