IT Network & Security Engineer – HVDC Control & Protection
As a Communication Engineer for HVDC Systems you will work within a team of HVDC project management and engineering specialists to design and deliver full HVDC control and protection solutions to our customers.
Responsibilities
- Provide the project engineering “IT Network Communication” and “IT‑Security” for HVDC control & protection systems (LAN/WAN communication, time synchronization, remote access, telecommunication).
- Design and implement the IT network infrastructure for control & protection equipment utilized in HVDC plants to ensure reliable communication between the various automation systems, including integration of process devices and subsystems.
- Create and maintain project‑specific technical specifications, documents, and manuals.
- Clarify communication concepts with internal departments, external suppliers, and customers.
- Configure communication components (router, switch, firewall, master clock, etc.) under consideration of IT security requirements.
- Perform system integration and commissioning of the various components in the test lab (verification of proper communication, IT security, time synchronization, redundancy, etc.).
- Conduct and support Factory Acceptance Tests with sub‑suppliers and customers, and provide technical support during the commissioning phase.
Qualifications
- Degree in electrical engineering, automation technology, or network/communication technology.
- 3–5 years of work experience in networks for industrial applications.
- Experience in project engineering, customer clarification, and working in complex teams.
- Understanding of SCADA systems as part of energy transmission systems (e.g., Substation Automation).
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, switching, redundancy mechanisms, time synchronization, etc.
- Experience configuring switches, routers, and firewalls from manufacturers such as CISCO, RuggedCom, Checkpoint, Fortinet.
- Knowledge of IT security for industrial applications (concepts, hardening, documentation).
- Knowledge of international IT‑Security standards (IEC 62443‑3‑3, NERC CIP, BDEW, etc.) and implementation experience of the corresponding requirements in control systems.
- Knowledge of security of IT components, networks and applications in theory (threat analysis) and practice (penetration testing, etc.).
