Key Job Responsibilities of an Intensivist

• Patient Assessment and Management: Evaluate and manage critically ill patients, making decisions about treatment, testing, and procedures.
• Advanced Procedures: Perform critical procedures like intubation, central line placement, and arterial line insertion.
• Collaboration: Work with multidisciplinary teams (physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, etc.) to develop and implement patient care plans.
• Monitoring and Interpretation: Monitor patient progress closely, interpreting diagnostic tests (e.g., blood gas analysis, ECG, etc.).
• Communication: Communicate effectively with patients and families about their condition and prognosis, as well as with other healthcare professionals.
• Education and Mentorship: Teach and mentor medical residents, fellows, and other staff.
• Research and Quality Improvement: Participate in clinical research and quality improvement initiatives.
• Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care activities.
• On-Call: Be available for on-call duties and emergencies.

In addition to these core responsibilities, intensivists may also be involved in:

• Interhospital Transfers: Managing the transfer of critically ill patients between hospitals.
