Job summary

JoVE is seeking an HTML Developer to join a collaborative IT team responsible for publishing science articles to the web. You will convert MS Word manuscripts to HTML/CSS mark-up, ensure content quality, and use XML to submit manuscript data to science indexes.

Attention to detail and knowledge of HTML/XML are essential. Key tasks include converting .doc/.docx, adding HTML/CSS tags for web display, preparing graphics, and formatting XML for PubMed Central submissions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Experience with HTML and CSS is mandatory.
  • Proficient in Python execution.
  • Understanding of XML structure and usage.
  • Experience with image editing and formatting.
  • Knowledge of HTML entities and Greek characters.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Team-oriented, collaborative working style.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare science manuscripts in Microsoft Word, including converting from .doc to .docx and removing formatting errors.
  • Conversion of .docx to html code using python scripts.
  • Transfer all manuscript text into our digital publication tools to prepare them for release.
  • Add appropriate HTML and CSS tags to manuscripts, so that the articles are properly displayed on the web.
  • Prepare graphics used in manuscripts so that they are properly sized and displayed on the web.
  • Cross-check author information, institution information and references for errors.
  • Work with character entities, especially science related Greek characters, and be sure they display properly.
  • Format, validate and correct XML versions of manuscripts, so that they can be submitted to PubMed Central, an online database of scientific abstracts and references.

Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree
  • Experience working with HTML and CSS is mandatory. This includes working with things like nested lists, tables, and inline/block elements
  • Skilled with handling python execution
  • An understanding of XML structure and usage is required
  • Experience using image editing and formatting techniques
  • Knowledge of HTML entities, mathematical notations and Greek characters is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Quick learner, with effective problem-solving skills, and ability to find solutions to new and complex issues
  • Detail oriented, organized, and able to keep track of multiple projects and issues independently
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office environment
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
