Job summary

Michael Page partners with a multinational healthcare and insurance leader to appoint a Head of Engineering in Gurgaon. You will lead SEMs, shape engineering strategy with product teams, and build high-performance groups delivering complex software systems.

The role requires deep technical expertise, cloud service experience, and a proven delivery track record within a dynamic, global setting. You will mentor managers and drive architectural decisions in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Degree/Masters in Computer Science or equivalent education/work experience.
• Extensive experience in full‑stack Java development with influence over architecture decisions.
• 15+ years as a software engineer across technologies (Java, Javascript) including distributed systems.
• 5+ years as a software engineering manager leading high-performing teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of Software Engineer Managers (SEMs) in development and maintenance of technology products.
• Collaborate with Heads of Engineering to foster a culture of high standards.
• Develop long-term strategy with Product Management and SEMs; translate into achievable goals.
• Guide architectural choices; ensure engineering and testing approaches fit the overall strategy.
• Deliver regular updates to team and leadership.
• Mentor teams to drive continuous engineering improvement with metrics.
• Encourage innovative ideas to improve objectives.

Job Description

As Head of Engineering, you will lead teams that create technology products that help people have the best healthcare experience they have ever had. We are looking for someone with a passion for technology and people, who wants to create amazing products. The ideal candidate will be someone who has deep technical expertise across a range of technologies, a track record of delivery, along with experience in building high-performance teams.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

• Lead a team of Software Engineer Managers (SEMs) in the development and maintenance of technology products
• Work alongside fellow Heads of Engineering to build and maintain a culture of high standards
• Working with Product Management and your SEMs, develop the long-term strategy with your teams and support them as they translate it into achievable goals
• Help drive a deep understanding how architectural elements of the software ecosystem work together, and ensure teams develop engineering and testing approaches that fit the overall strategy
• Deliver regular updates within the team and to leadership
• Foster a culture of continuous engineering improvement through mentoring, feedback, and metrics
• Encourage innovative ideas to the table every day, in order to find better ways of accomplishing your objectives

Experience and Qualifications

• Degree/Masters in Computer Science or equivalent of education/work experience
• Must have extensive experience in full‑stack Java development, with proven ability to influence architecture decisions, guide engineering teams, and drive high‑quality delivery
• 15+ years as a software engineer (profession/academic) across a range of technologies (include Java, Javascript), including building distributed systems
• 5+ years of experience as a software engineering manager building, leading and developing exceptional teams in the development of complex systems
• Experience designing software architectures for scalability, reliability and performance
• Experience building a product from concept to prototype and implementation
• Experience developing cloud software services
• Computer Science fundamentals experience in data structures, algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis
• Proven knowledge and experience of agile delivery processes
• Experience in recruiting, managing and coaching individuals to improve their skills and make them more effective.
• Experience in communicating with teams and senior management to understand outcomes, describe features, technical designs, and product strategy
• Able to work in a complex organisation, maintaining resilience during transformation
• A curious and highly flexible thinker who enjoys a challenge
