Hardware Engineer (Smart Electricity Meters) – Lead/Principal

Job Code: IN-260826-1839

Contract

Role Summary

We are looking for a Lead/Principal Hardware Engineer with strong hands-on experience in smart electricity meter hardware design and development.

The role will involve owning the end-to-end hardware design and validation of single-phase and three-phase electricity meters, including Whole Current (WC), Low-Tension Current Transformer (LTCT), and High-Tension Current Transformer (HTCT) variants.

The successful candidate will be responsible for schematic design, multi-layer PCB design, metrology circuits, power supplies, hardware bring-up, debugging, validation, and supporting EVT/DVT/PVT builds through production.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design and development of metering hardware based on energy-measurement AFE/ICs, such as Analog Devices ADE7953 for single-phase applications and ADE7880, ADE9078, ADE9000, or equivalent devices from Microchip, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, or other vendors for three-phase and power-quality applications.

Design current-sensing front ends appropriate for WC, LTCT, and HTCT meter variants using shunts, current transformers (CTs), and Rogowski coils, as applicable.

Design voltage-sensing circuits using precision resistor dividers, along with PGAs, anti-aliasing filters, signal-conditioning circuits, and calibration interfaces.

Perform schematic capture and multi-layer PCB design using Altium Designer and/or Cadence OrCAD/Allegro, Mentor PADS, or KiCad.

Own component selection, BOM development, PCB stack-up definition, design-for-manufacturing (DFM), and design-for-test (DFT) activities.

Design and validate metering power supplies, including SMPS and/or capacitive dropper power supplies, as applicable to the product architecture.

Design appropriate isolation between high-voltage and low-voltage domains, including creepage and clearance requirements in accordance with applicable standards such as IEC 60664-1.

Implement surge, ESD, EFT, and other protection mechanisms required for reliable meter operation and regulatory compliance.

Lead hardware bring-up, debugging, characterization, and validation activities from prototype through production.

Plan and execute EVT, DVT, and PVT builds in collaboration with EMS/CM partners.

Define and support the development of production jigs, fixtures, automated/manual test stations, and hardware validation setups.

Support conformal-coating selection and validation, where required.

Work closely with firmware, software, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, and certification teams to resolve hardware and system-level issues.

Support regulatory and certification testing, including accuracy, type testing, EMC/immunity, surge, ESD, and environmental qualification.

Support compliance with applicable Australian and Indian metering standards and technical specifications.

Required Technical Skills & Tools

Hands-on experience in smart electricity meter hardware design, preferably covering both single-phase and three-phase meters.

Strong experience with metrology AFE/ICs such as ADE7xxx/ADE9xxx or equivalent Microchip, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, or other energy-metering ICs.

Strong understanding of energy measurement principles, including voltage/current sensing, active/reactive/apparent energy measurement, phase measurement, calibration, and accuracy requirements.

Practical experience with current-sensing technologies including shunt, CT, and Rogowski coil implementations.

Strong analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design and troubleshooting skills.

Proficiency in Altium Designer is preferred. Experience with Cadence OrCAD/Allegro, Mentor PADS, or KiCad is also valuable.

Experience with LTspice, PSpice, or equivalent circuit simulation tools.

Strong knowledge of power-supply design, including SMPS and capacitive-dropper architectures.

Good understanding of HV/LV isolation, creepage and clearance, surge protection, ESD/EFT protection, and EMI/EMC mitigation.
