Job summary

Wits Innovation Lab is seeking a backend-heavy Full Stack Engineer with 3+ years of professional software development experience to independently build and maintain production-grade applications.

The role emphasizes practical experience with AI-assisted development tools for at least one year, and requires strong backend skills (Node.js/TypeScript or Golang), REST APIs, databases, and system design. You will collaborate across teams and own features end-to-end.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional software development experience.
• Hands-on in Node.js/TypeScript or Golang backend stack.
• Experience designing REST APIs and backend services.
• Understanding of HTTP, authentication/authorization, error handling, and async programming.
• Ability to write maintainable, testable production code.
• Experience using Agentic AI or AI-coding tools for at least 1 year.
• Experience with AI tools for code generation, debugging, or review.
• Familiarity with React.js or Flutter for frontend/mobile tasks.
• Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL/MySQL.
• Basic to intermediate system design knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of features from design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
• Mostly work on backend systems, contribute to React.js or Flutter apps when needed.
• Participate in technical and system design discussions and trade-offs.
• Debug issues across application, API, database, and infrastructure.
• Use AI coding tools to improve productivity without compromising quality.
• Collaborate with engineering, QA, product, design, DevOps/SRE, and stakeholders.

Job description

We are looking for a backend-heavy Full Stack Engineer with 3+ years of experience who can independently build and maintain production-grade applications.

A key requirement is practical experience using Agentic AI or AI-assisted development tools for at least one year. The candidate should understand how to use AI coding agents effectively while still reviewing, validating, testing, and taking ownership of the generated code.

Must-Have Requirements

• 3+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong hands-on experience in at least one backend stack: Node.js / TypeScript or Golang.
• Experience designing and developing REST APIs, backend services, integrations, and business logic.
• Good understanding of HTTP, API design, authentication/authorization, error handling, asynchronous programming, and backend application architecture.
• Ability to write maintainable, modular, testable, and production-quality code.

Agentic AI / AI-Assisted Development

• Minimum 1 year of regular hands-on experience using Agentic AI or AI coding tools as part of software development.
• Experience using AI tools for code generation, debugging, refactoring, code understanding, testing, documentation, or code review.
• Should know how to provide appropriate context and constraints to coding agents and validate their output before use.
• Experience with tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Windsurf, or equivalent tools is acceptable.

Frontend / Mobile

• At least 1 year of hands-on experience with React.js or Flutter.
• The candidate does not need to be a frontend specialist, but should be comfortable building screens/components, integrating APIs, managing basic state, handling authentication, and debugging frontend/mobile issues.

Databases

• Hands-on experience with at least one SQL database such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, or equivalent.
• Working understanding of schema design, relationships, joins, indexing, transactions, and basic query optimisation.

System Design

• Basic-to-intermediate system design knowledge is mandatory.
• Should be able to reason about API design, service boundaries, database selection, caching, scalability, asynchronous processing, failure handling, and basic distributed-system trade-offs.
• Deep architecture expertise is not expected, but the candidate should be able to design and explain a reasonably scalable real-world application.

Good-to-Have Skills

• NoSQL: MongoDB or another NoSQL database.
• Caching: Redis and practical understanding of caching patterns.
• Containers / DevOps: Docker, Docker Compose, CI/CD, Kubernetes exposure, or cloud deployment experience.
• Security: JWT/OAuth, RBAC, API security, secrets management, input validation, rate limiting, OWASP fundamentals, and secure coding practices.
• Observability: Grafana, Prometheus, Tempo, Loki, OpenTelemetry, Jaeger, ELK/OpenSearch, or similar tools.
• Architecture: Microservices, event-driven systems, queues, background workers, WebSockets, API gateways, or serverless architectures.

Responsibilities
