PCI India, a registered Indian society, has been working in India for the past 27 years. We drive interventions to transform the lives of communities at scale by solving complex development problems. In the past year, PCI India reached more than 1.7 crore, i.e. 17 million people in 16 States.
PCI India, with support from HSBC, has been implementing the DEWEE initiative to enhance the incomes of rural women entrepreneurs through improved access to productive technologies, finance, and enterprise-support systems. Over the course of its implementation, DEWEE has generated valuable evidence on the factors that enable women-led enterprises to become more productive, profitable, and resilient. DEWEE intervention demonstrated that access to reliable and affordable energy can significantly improve enterprise performance. The DRE transition of 43 THR manufacturing units led to 2X increase in production efficiency and average annual savings of ~3 lakhs/unit. Building on these learnings, DEWEE expanded its scope in Phase II to support individual women-led enterprises, including flour mills, tailoring units, retail shops, and irrigation-based enterprises. The program also transitioned from a fully subsidized approach to a co-investment model, with entrepreneurs contributing at least 50% of the technology cost.
Building on the foundation established through DEWEE, PCI India proposes a finance-led approach designed to address the barriers that prevent women entrepreneurs from scaling their businesses. With support from HSBC, PCI India in Uttar Pradesh will focus on development of financial products for enabling women entrepreneurs to access capital for business expansion, enhance business economics understanding of women entrepreneurs and connect them to appropriate finance, and facilitate access to growth capital. The project will strengthen the financial and business capabilities of 20,000 women entrepreneurs, demonstrate a scalable financing framework for enterprise expansion, and create a pathway for large-scale adoption of women-centric enterprise development models across India.
