Job summary

Babcock Power APAC Pvt. Ltd. seeks a Fuel Equipment Design Engineer in Chennai to lead design and execution of gas-fired boiler fuel systems, touching piping, burners, and emissions performance. The role requires deep knowledge of P&IDs, ASME B31, NFPA, and CFD, with field-startup experience and willingness to travel.

The ideal candidate has 8+ years in power industry, a mechanical or chemical engineering background, and a passport ready for site projects globally; master’s degree preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical or chemical engineering.
• Eight+ years of experience in the power or related industry.
• Knowledge of ASME B31 Piping Design and NFPA codes.
• Valid passport and ability to travel.
• Field start-up experience is a plus.
• CFD experience and 3D model review exposure.

Responsibilities

• Lead design engineer on projects for natural gas delivery systems and fossil fuel boiler designs.
• Design and specify equipment including gas filtration, pressure reduction, and burners components.
• Prepare and review P&IDs; size and select oil firing system equipment and fittings.
• Drive performance in natural gas-fired boiler projects and later grow as subject matter expert.
• Provide proposal support with customer presentations and cost estimates.
• Author field test procedures; lead commissioning and emissions optimization tests.
• Maintain engineering standards for equipment sizing and performance predictions.
• Collaborate across cross-functional teams and support site erection and commissioning.

Job description

The Fuel Equipment Design Engineer will be responsible for full contract and design execution of fuel system and combustion equipment supply contracts with a focus on natural gas delivery systems and gas-fired low NOx combustion technology for wall fired and T fired boilers in the industrial and electric utility space. Also responsible for Low Nox retrofits of Coal and oil-fired steam generators, Combustion improvement, studies and burner tuning.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Serve as the lead design engineer on many projects in the development of project Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDS) for complete natural gas delivery systems, coal and oil-fired systems.
• Design, specify and/or selection appropriate equipment for responsible systems, such as natural gas filtration, pressure reduction and/or flow control equipment as well as burners system components and auxiliaries.
• Design. sizing and selection of fuel piping & supports, burners of coal firing systems. Preparation and review of P&IDs, sizing and selection of oil firing system equipment & fittings.
• Meet performance expectations for executing natural gas-fired boiler projects, becoming a subject matter expert in fuel system design and the various firing systems as the individual grows within the organization.
• Provide proposal and sales support with customer presentations, consultative technical guidance, and project financial estimates.
• Author field test procedures and reports, and lead service teams during fuel system commissioning and burner and emissions performance optimization and acceptance testing programs.
• Develop and/or maintain existing engineering standards for equipment sizing and performance predictions.
• Develop working knowledge of the engineering division-standards, contract file system, drawing file system, and quality procedures.
• Exposure to turnkey project execution of Fossil Fuel Power Plants, with a clear understanding of end-to-end project activities and effective collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams, along with hands-on involvement in supporting site erection and commissioning responsibilities.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or chemical engineering required; master’s degree in mechanical or chemical engineering preferred.
• Eight (8) or more years’ experience in the power or related industry.
• Knowledge of ASME B31 Piping Design, NFPA Codes, and product application. A plus
• Valid passport and ability to travel as required.
• Experience in field start-up and operations is a plus.
• Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a plus.
• Exposure to 3D packages, extraction of drawings, review of 3D models is a plus. Exposure to Material standards, control valve sizing standards, pressure drop calculations.
