Job summary

Mahindra University || Centre for Life Sciences is seeking a Fab Lab Engineer to operate, maintain and manage our fabrication and prototyping facility for startups and students, helping turn ideas into working prototypes.

You will design and run short courses, prepare CAD/CAM files, enforce lab safety, and manage procurement and vendor coordination, reporting to the CEO. A hands-on role with teaching and equipment maintenance responsibilities in a dynamic academic setting.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or BE/B.Tech in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Production, Electronics or related discipline.
  • Desirable: FAB Lab certification or training in additive manufacturing, CNC operation or embedded systems.
  • Hands‑on fab lab experience essential.
  • Experience conducting hands‑on training/workshops advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain and manage fab lab equipment (3D printers, laser cutter, CNC routers, lathe & milling machines, PCB fabrication setup, soldering and electronics workstations).
  • Support startups with prototyping: design for manufacture, material selection, machining, fabrication and assembly.
  • Maintain equipment utilisation records for reporting to funding agencies.
  • Maintain inventory of consumables, spares and calibration records for tools and machines.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance, calibration and consumables management to keep machines working.
  • Design and run short-term hands-on courses and workshops on prototyping, 3D printing, laser cutting, PCB design and CAD.

Job description

Fab Lab Engineer (Staff Position)

Runs and maintains the fabrication and prototyping facility of the AIC, and supports startups and students in turning ideas into working prototypes.

Reports to the CEO.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate, maintain and manage the fab lab equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutter, CNC routers, lathe & milling machines, PCB fabrication setup, soldering and electronics workstations, and hand and power tools.
  • Support startups with prototyping: design for manufacture, material selection, machining, fabrication and assembly.
  • Maintain equipment utilisation records – machine hours, users, jobs and outputs – in the form required for reporting to Atal Innovation Mission and other funding agencies.
  • Maintain the inventory of consumables and spares, and the upkeep, condition and calibration records of tools and hand instruments as well as machines.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance, first-level repair, calibration and consumables management, and keep every machine in working condition.
  • Design and run short-term hands-on courses and workshops on prototyping, 3D printing, laser cutting, PCB design and CAD for students, faculty and founders, planned in consultation with the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Prepare CAD and CAM files for fabrication and guide users in converting designs into machine-ready files.
  • Enforce lab safety protocols and ensure they are followed by startups, students, staff and visitors, including induction, protective equipment, machine access rules and incident records.
  • Ensure annual maintenance contracts for all equipment are in place and renewed in time, coordinate with vendors for spares, service and calibration, and raise requirements for new equipment with support of the accounts manager.
  • Maintain the upkeep, layout and readiness of the lab for user access and visitor demonstrations.
  • Carry out any other responsibilities assigned by the CEO.
Qualification
  • Essential: Diploma or B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Production, Electronics or a related discipline.
  • Desirable: Certification or formal training in FAB Lab, additive manufacturing, CNC operation or embedded systems.
Experience
  • B.E. / B.Tech: 3+ years. Diploma: 4+ years.
  • Hands-on experience in a fab lab, makerspace, tinkering lab, prototyping workshop, tool room or product development setup is essential.
  • Experience of conducting hands‑on training or workshops will be an advantage.
Skills And Attributes
  • Hands‑on operation of 3D printers (FDM and resin), laser cutters, CNC routers, lathe and milling machines, and PCB fabrication and soldering equipment.
  • CAD and CAM proficiency: Fusion 360, SolidWorks or AutoCAD; slicing software such as Cura or PrusaSlicer; KiCad or Eagle for PCB design.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, repair and calibrate lab equipment.
  • Ability to teach and work patiently with first‑time users.
  • Discipline in lab safety, housekeeping and record keeping.
  • Willingness to do hands‑on operational work alongside the team.
